Free Music Review: And You Think America's Obesity Epidemic Is Bad?

This album is one of the few out there that has laid the foundation for hundreds of bands to follow it. The lyrics are brutally honest and heartfelt, unlike the so-called "emo" of today, which includes bands like the Ataris and similar bands, and the overall musical effect is amazing. This is a "landmark" band for the DC/Dischord scene, according to most people. I am of the opinion that all labels on music should be rejected because most music is too complex to put into a certain category, so I hesitate to put Rites Of Spring in a box along with other bands of the kind. As for the remarks of other reviewers, comparing ROS to Fugazi, Husker Du, and Minor Threat: Of course, anyone can compare one band to another. And every band out there is going to have an influenced sound. There is no such thing as original anymore, and this is to be expected. You can't create a new genre without someone, somewhere, saying that "Hey, they sound like (insert band name here)" What matters is if the band being spoken of is influenced by real music; music that lives up to its name. Rites Of Spring is known as "one of the first emo bands" and "the ones who started it all." This label is a good thing, insofar as labels CAN be a good thing. The sad part to this story is that, while there are still real punk/emo/hardcore/whatever the hell you want to call it bands in the world, they are getting fewer, being overpowered by prefabricated, sold out bands such as Good Charlotte and New Found Glory. These bands are put together for the sole purpose of becoming famous and being "stars", and it's disenheartening to see the mainstream labeling things like this "punk." It convinces lost little kids that if you have spiked hair or a piercing anywhere other than your ear, you are considered punk. Rites Of Spring is a band that started the movement, and their music still influences artists today. In a way, it's sad that this band isn't more well known, but if MTV started playing Fugazi or Embrace, imagine the shock. Emo and punk and all these other underground genres are almost meant to stay underground. Even though it would give the masses a chance to snap out of their herd mentality, such raw, emotional music will never be appeciated by 95% of America.
