Free Music Review: Quite Good
Hit: 4 Stars

Like so many film scores, Burwell's compositions are usually only as good as the features that they're written for. As a result, most of his collaborations with the Coen brothers have yielded impressive results, while much of his other work is of mixed quality.

The score for "Rob Roy" is worthy of the film, and definitely one of his better efforts. The qualities and faults of the music mirror those of the film: despite the odd melodramatic passage here and there, it's alternately rousing and tender, and features a very memorable main theme that's utilized to great effect throughout the whole of the score.

The orchestral music of this score is supplemented by quite a lot of Scottish folk music, which is ably performed by Capercaillie. One of this score's highlights is an impassioned performance by Capercaillie singer Karen Matheson of Annag Chaimbeul's classic lament, "Ailein duinn."
