Free Music Review: An amazing solo effort by this Matchbox 20 star
Hit: 5 Stars

Rob Thomas. A name that is becoming automatically recognizeable in today's society. Whether you know him from his collaborations with such acts as Santana or Mick Jagger, or if you know of the music he has made with his group, Matchbox 20, there is a good chance you've heard of his name at least once in your life. His solo debut, Something to be, was released in April, and I was quick to pick it up. I've been a fan of him and his music for years. The first single, "Lonely no more", was released in February, and I loved it. It had a latin beat which is something I enjoy. The video was hot, and it only revved up more interest for me and hopefully others when it was released last month.

The album itself has twelve tracks, and not one of them is bad. I enjoy each and every song on this album, and usually that does not happen. We all know when you buy a CD, the chance is pretty good that you won't like a good number of the tracks. We all have CD's resting on our shelves because they had that one hit song on them. Not the case here with Something to be.The music is fast, slow, and in-between. The lyrics are powerful and moving. Everyday I have a new favorite song on the album because with continued listening I keep finding another song to love on this CD. It hasn't left my CD player since I got the CD.

There is some concern that Rob will leave Matchbox 20 and pursue a fully solo career with this CD release, but I don't see that happening personally. Rob considers Matchbox 20 like his family after all these years. I think this CD was more of a case of him needing to spread his wings and do something more musically and lyrically. Just as he has done with his collaborations. He keeps going out of the box of what he is used to. He expands himself. This album is just another expansion on what he wants to do. I, for one, recommend this CD.

Purchased Rob's CD on it's release date, just three days after attending his Ventura, California club concert. The show was fantastic (although some of the pushy fans in attendance could learn a few things about "manners"). As for the CD it hasn't been out of my player since I first put it on. For those of you who wrote unkind reviews my only guess is that you are too young to appreciate when a true artist has truly grown. And by the way, when you review someone's hard work it would be best if you remembered that you are writing about a fellow human being (that's for the handful of reviewers who wrote "nasty" remarks). In fact Rob stated in interviews that he wanted to do something different than what he usually does with Matchbox. That was the whole idea behind his first solo CD!

As the artist he truly is, Rob's conscious decision to record a variety of musical styles rather than a single themed CD pays off. Also, if he would have written and recorded a CD that sounded like just another "Matchbox" one what would have been the whole purpose of releasing a solo project? His vocal talents allow him to venture into new territory as do his very accomplished songwriting abilities. While it is entirely possible that the hit song "Lonely No More" was intended to fit in with the MTV/VH1 playlist, that didn't seem to be the route of the other tracks. It's difficult to pick just one favorite song so I'll choose a few: "Ever the same", "When the heartache ends", "This is how a heart breaks." Rob, the fans who appreciate your talent will continue to follow you as you continue to grow; that was evident at the Ventura show where fans seemed to range in age from 12-50. So here's to the future...Congratualations on a job well done! Luv ya, Sydney

Free Music Review: Something To Be is really something special
Hit: 5 Stars

Rob Thomas is such a talented songwriter and musician. He proves it on this solo debut. I liked the documentary featured on the bonus DVD about the making of the album. Rob gives credit to all the musicians who worked on this album. The DVD also features pictures of Rob writing and composing music. I love to see an artist at work, so I liked these photos.

My favorite track is the first single Lonely No More. This song is about how actions speak louder than words when it comes to relationships. and love. I also enjoyed This is How A Breaks. These first two songs have so much energy because of the awesome drum playing by Gerald Heyward. The title track has the universal message that we all search for an sense of identity and purpose in our lives. All That I Am is beautiful song about the sacrifices people are willing to make for the people they love and the things they believe in. I love the steel lap guitar playing by Robert Randolph on this track. He gives this song a spiritual and mystical sound.

Another highlight on this album for me. is the track Street Corner Symphony. This song is about accepting people from all cultures and just about celebrating life. The trumpet playing by Gary Grant gives this song a fun playful quality. My My My is a very deep philosophical song about how a person's influence and achievements can live on after they die. This is a song shows the depth Rob Thomas has as a songwriter. Here Comest The Night is a very moving song that showcases Rob's skill on the piano. I really enjoyed listening to this album and watching the DVD.

Free Music Review: A must have!

Rob Thomas has surprised us once again with his talent.

"Something to be" is bound to be a classic!

This album opens with groundbreaking song "This is how a heart breaks", a song that will make you sing along and tap your feet.

Next is the catchy single "Lonely no more". Rob Thomas voice once again will move inside you.

Ever the Same a beautiful, sweet, heartfelt ballad...one of the best tracks on the album.

I am an illusion the rhythm of this song is great...almost like those james bond theme songs.Talks about a darkside, similar to the one portrayed in matchbox 20's 'bent'. Great song.

When the heartache ends, great lyrics with a fresh guitar sound, what else can i say?

Something to be, a sarcastic song about self-image. Very well done.

All that I am, a masterpiece. A powerful, surprisingly-written ballad...left me speechless.

Problem girl a refreshing and positive song, i really recommend this song. :)

Falling to pieces...Fun and creative, rob fused perfectly several different styles in this song.

My,my,my good but not extraordinary...a soft ballad.

Streetcorner Symphony...perfect to wake up with! Happy and playful, absolutely love it! Great rhythm.

Now Comes The Night...simply impressive.

I really recommend this album. Its refreshing,mindblowing...two thumbs up. If you're a Thomas fan you'll like it, if you're new to Thomas music, you'll like it...

Free Music Review: This is how Rob Thomas is!
Hit: 5 Stars

After a long time with the Rock band Matchbox 20 where they had many hits together, he joined Santana on "Smooth" some years ago and scored a 1# hit. Now finally a album aswell. And really, this album is great. It's a mix of his inspirations, Rock, Pop, Soul etc. After hearing the first single "Lonely No More" you could think that this album was another Justin Timberlake esque. But no, it's just part of the variety of this album. The first song "This is how the Heart Breaks" is a excellent uptempo rock-pop song about relationships and so is "Lonely No More" which is the best song of this album. "Ever The Same" is a great ballad. "When the Heartache Ends" midtempo rock song and the title track "Something to Be" another funky pop-rock song. "All that I Am" is wonderful, it is a slow song with great music around it, it sounds orinetal and would suit well on a chill out album like Buddha Bar. "Problem Girl" is a traditional rock song with a good guitar solo aswell while "Falling to Pieces" is funky blues rock. If you want a great really slow ballad, "Why Why Why" takes the price. "Streetcorner Symphony" is a catchy jazzy uptempo song that discusses the multi cultaral society.

While this album is very personal, it also shows many of his influents of how great musician Rob is. I was surprised that he could go this far from Matchbox 20's music and create a album full of diversity with flavours from everywhere in the music encyclopedia. "Something to Be" is complete and one of my favorite albums so far this year.
