Free Music Notes for Rob Thomas: Something to BeFree Music Review: Outstanding Solo Effort from the Conjure Man! Hit: 5 Stars
Rob Thomas is the contemporary master of the great hook. Any guy who wrote "Smooth" knows his pop chart stuff. He's got a great, soulful sound, and always did. I think any comparison to Justin Timberlake is ludicrous, and a fantastic compliment to Timberlake. Rob is a smart, edgy guy, even if his music isn't edgy. Matchbox twenty is as far from edgy as you can get, but they've pumped out some terrific singles. Call them "post-grunge", "alt-rock", or anything else - that doesn't change the fact that Rob has had a great history since "Push". He knows how to reach into your chest, grab your heart, and say, "It doesn't even matter if you KNOW what I'm singing - you will love this song!" This guy is truly talented, and I've never understood the static that critics have given him over the years. The accusation that he's responsible for all of the prefabricated late-90's pop in the world is ridiculous, and the notion that he shouldn't sing his own stuff, but only write for OTHER people, is absurd.
"Lonely No More" is another great single with a slick urban sound, and it hooked me instantly. The video adds to this mesmerizing quality, with its "Rubik's cube" flip gimmick. I loved the look of it, and Rob's new hair! He's older and more mature now, and he's not the same man that he was 10 years ago. He's changing, and this is evidence of that change. This new album has some unbelievable new sounds on it, and he's mid-journey in his songwriting life. Let him go on that journey.
Free Music Review: Great album. Hit: 5 Stars
Before buying this cd I knew Rob Thomas from his hit song "SMOOTH" next to Santana and some from MATCHBOX 20 but Rob Thomas never really called my attention. I simply thought that I was going to like it but nothing special. But I was surprised when I played it, I found it very good.
This is Rob's first solo album and he does it very good. He follows his music roots but from my point of view also sounds fresher. The first single from this albums was "LONELY NO MORE" a great pop/rock song that made the perfect presentation for the album. It reached #6 on Billboard's Hot 100, then came my favorite song of the album, "EVER THE SAME", this is more a ballad but I don't know why it didn't make it big on the charts, it only peaked at #48 on Billborad's Hot 100. The third single "THIS IS HOW A HEART BREAKS" is also a great song, this is more rock and made it to #52 on the same list.
This are some commercial facts of the album. About the album perse, I can tell that has a good mix from ballads to rock tracks, it's really easy to listen, Rob's voice is very good and performs good also, which makes the album difficult for you to get tired. Check the singles and the tracks "ALL THAT I AM", "AM I AN ILUSSION", "PROBLEM GIRL" and "FALLIN' TO PIECES".
The DVD part of this production is not very good. It only includes lyrics that you can also find on the booklet, a photo gallery and a short documentary with some behind the scenes from the album but nothing special really.
Free Music Review: Universal Genres Hit: 5 Stars
First off, I have never been a big matchbox twenty fan so i can't quite relate this to his older CDs. In fact, I didn't even kno who Rob Thomas was, till this effort. Sad, I know.
...but I'm glad I kno now! Rob's first single, Lonely No More, is pretty much of latin-vibe. It's very up-beat, and so far my favorite song off the disc, or even of this year. His other songs aren't quite the same in comparison, but they aren't weak.
*Track #1, #4, #6, #11 are each very upbeat. #1 in particular goes back into his old band's style. #4 & #6 have nice messages, but don't make you go through the cheesy movements. #11 in particular is very anti-racial and welcoming, a very cheery song. #3,#5, #12 are all pretty classical, but they are each pretty deep in a different sense and nice to listen to, if you like the adjustment from his normal rock. The latter (12) actually features him on the piano, which is a first I believe. #9 and #8 are pretty sweet, pretty funny in some senses. #7 & #10, i have to say, are probably not my favorites. It has taken a while for me to adjust to them, in fact, I still cannot get used to 'em. A little too slow for my style.
Hands down definitely #2 ranges best, but 1,4,6,11, and 12 (for a change) are very nice attempts to make his CD all around very different and not just based on one theme, such as Rock, or Pop, or whatever. They're all very fun and a great change from before, even if it did mean a break from his band.
Free Music Review: Something Achieved Hit: 5 Stars
Rob Thomas' Something To Be is one of the best releases so far this year. Depaturing from his formulatic adult rock sounds of group matchbox twenty, Thomas experiments with several types of music on Something To Be. We should have expected this coming off the Santana collaboration a few years back, "Smooth" and the lead off single of this album, the funky rocker "Lonely No More."
Let's just say you'll get a mix of it all on this disc: rock, latin arrangements, funk, soul, rhythym and blues...Thomas leaves no sound uncovered. While some tracks work better than others, no song on the record is a failure by any means.
Like the album or not, Something To Be offers commercial songs that will get in your head. First track "This Is How A Heart Breaks" and "Streetcorner Symphony" are both catchy mainstream appealing songs, but also offer a deep insight of the soulful nature of Rob Thomas' album.
Key tracks are definitely "Streetcorner Symphony" and "Lonely No More", but this album features several songs that could be radio hits. Thomas deserves commercial success after releasing a very well written and produced set of songs that deserve fans' attention. This dualdisc features a lot of interactive media features that should get fans happy. Buy it for "Lonely No More", but keep it for the rest of the great tunes. This is a good one.
Free Music Review: No filler on this cd! Hit: 5 Stars
First of all I should mention that I get bored very easily and hate spending $$ on a cd only to find most of it is filler or all the songs are interchangeable. So it was very refreshing to discover this great album.
I've been listening to the cd steady since I bought it and there isn't a single song that I want to skip. For out and out 'crank up the volume'and enjoy, you can't beat "This Is How A Heart Breaks." On the other hand "All That I Am" moves me lyrically and the instruments used in this cut really add an interesting dimension to the song. "Now Comes The Night" is beautiful in its simplicity. I could go on about each song but I'll just say they're all worthy of being on this album and I'm continually discovering new things to enjoy musically and lyrically in them.
Rob Thomas is versatile and talented, and I say kudos to him for trying out different styles. That's what real artists/musicians do. They love music and aren't afraid to stretch and grow as performers. (This is the same reason I love Colin James' cd's. He too likes to explore musically.)
As to the DVD and CD layers. I've had no problem playing either.
