Free Music Notes for Rob Thomas: Something to BeFree Music Review: Different....But still great! Hit: 5 Stars
I was a little bit hesistant to buy Rob's solo album, because I am such a huge Matchbox Twenty fan and was afraid it would disapoint me. However, I found myself immediately addicted to this CD! Rob's voice is still as amazing as ever and his songwriting is absolutely brilliant and touching.
I honestly liked every song on this album, some more than others of course. They are all pretty unique from each other, this whole CD is a awesome mix of different genres. It is very different than then the normal Matchbox Twenty sound, but I still loved it!
I think the stand out song on this album is probably the title track "Something To Be"; I can see it being a single. "Ever The Same" and "Now Comest The Night" are both beautiful, touching songs (real tearjerkers). My personal favorite would be "Problem Girl", there is just something about that song that I think is great. After only listening to it once I got it stuck in my head the rest of the night!
I do suggest going out and buying this CD, I don't think you will be disapointed despite what other reviews may say. Rob Thomas is as great as he always was in Matchbox Twenty; different but great!
Free Music Review: No doubting Thomas.... Hit: 5 Stars
this CD totally sticks it to the "them." We all know what Thomas is talking about, right? It's about knowing who you are when the alarm clock goes off and you're tired from too many lemon-line sodas the night before. It's about not taking it anymore. It's about telling your boss that you've had enough of his nonsense and if he doesn't pipe down, you're going to hand-craft a pummeling. It's about telling yoru doctor that you're on to his con. It's about Meteorites and minotaurs. It's about the color orange and why it matters. It's about people who spend all their days searching for things, but never finding them. Why? because they're just not there. You know what I'm talking about. It's about rising to the top of your game, but never forgetting your name. It's about poetry and children's laughter. Baby powder in you shoes to help them smell fresh and never having to see that fool neighbor of yours with his shirt off, happily whistling while he waters he grass. Oh, I don't envy anyone who paid money for this. Heck, I'm hoping Rob moves on to something he's good at, like raising rabbits or nightwatchman at a doll factory.
Free Music Review: You Will Not Be Alone Hit: 5 Stars
"Something to Be" may be the perfect pop record. From the pounding drum on the opener "This Is How a Heart Breaks," the album takes off. "I Am An Illusion" has a haunting lyric of searing self-assessment that throbs to a luscious beat. The theme of the unhappy man continues on the raging title tune, "Play another one of those heart break songs; Tell another story of how things go wrong & they never get back; My pain is a platinum stack." The slower "All That I Am" is a strikingly lovely song, "And I breathe where you breathe, Let me stand where you stand." "Streetcorner Symphony" seems to finally rise from the troubled tracks into joy, "My sisters & my brothers of every different color, can't you feel that sunshine telling you to hold tight, things will be alright." The CD concludes with "Now Comes the Night" with Thomas' piano making the track seem like a hymn, "And when the day has all but ended & our echo starts to fade, No you will not be alone then & you will not be afraid." "Something To Be" is a tremendous set that touches the darkness & the light within us all. Enjoy!
Free Music Review: I really loved this Hit: 5 Stars
I listen to all sorts of music, so I was looking for something interesting. I will admit that I like pop music but I don't like the average pop crap that has been out lately. I've been listening to a lot of indie music..and associate with a lot of indie musicians. Every one of them that I have encountered so far have been like, "Eww, you bought the Rob Thomas CD?" because they think of themselves as music elitists when they're really just folk who refuse to buy anything that really sells.
Well, I gave the CD a chance and I really loved it. The song has a few beats like "Lonely No More" and some slower songs that really move me. The entire CD has the ability to get me awake, get me to sleep, get me to smile and get me to cry at once. Rob Thomas manages to cut through emotions that run deep and show them to you.
My favorite song of all is "Here Comes the Night", which I can relate to on the deepest level. The rest of the song are excellent as well. I always play the CD from beginning to end. :)
Free Music Review: Excellent CD by excellent artist Hit: 5 Stars
I love how people throw out the word "sell-out" ... since when is any artist tied down to "how they've always done things?" For true music fans and lovers, we can all appreciate the versatility and "out-of-the-box" thinking of artists who venture through new and different genres, not in an attempt to "find themselves," but rather in an effort to explore the breadth of muscianship, regardless of whether it's pop, rock, latin, hip-hop or r&b.
Not only is "...Something To Be" a fantastic album, but we as fans of Rob, of MB20 and of music in general should be grateful that he, as a serious artist, DIDN'T sell-out; that unlike most artists who shun musical evolution, he took a chance, and that chance paid off with a wonderful album. For those who are upset that he supposedly "turned against his roots," what do you know about his roots? I know one thing ... his roots are in music, and unlike other "artists" who do the same thing over and over because it works for them, he took a chance, and has been rightfully rewarded for it.
