Free Music Notes for Something to Be AlbumFree Music Review: Absolutely brilliant! Hit: 5 StarsRob Thomas has maintained a low profile for someone who has written for the likes of legendary Santana, Willie Nelson and Mick Jagger, received 3 Grammy's, have his first album with band Matchbox 20 go Diamond, and have several top 10 hits in a decade. RT dances on the fine line of creativity and overzealousness with an unbelievable array of artistic expression. This eclectic mix of sounds and genres could have been a big miss, as I feel Matchbox 20's Mad Season was, fraught with overproduction. The hit first single, "Lonely No More", is very different from the rest of the album, but is also different from anything else Rob has ever done, a great introduction to the new stylistics Rob has to offer on this album.
The usually maudlin, but always compassionate, lyrics from Rob are present, as well as a new, deeply loving and caring feel. Rob emotes the depths of insecurity, as previously worked on the huge 2003 hit "Unwell", on the title track, "Something to Be." Here, he laments how frustrating it can be for others to try to make you something else and how you can only be true to yourself.
On the standout track "I am an Illusion" Rob gets down to the nitty gritty, embracing the self-loathing Matchbox fans are used to. The production here is glorious, with famed guitarist Robert Randolph lending a hand to make an impressive rock track.
On the catchy "Streetcorner Symphony", Rob elicits assistance from well-respected guitarist John Mayer. The DVD footage on this DualDisc showcases the meeting of these two brilliant minds. It's a treat to be the proverbial fly on the wall as these two powerhouses of talent confer to make what is sure to be a showstopper at Rob's heralded concerts, of which diehard fans travel all over the country to attend.
"This is How a Heart Breaks," starts with an industrial sound, then turns brilliantly into rock with a urban edge. The fusing of genres is amazing.
With lyrics like "You're falling behind/hold on to me/never leave/forever be what you mean to me right now/don't you feel better now" the melodic "My My My" allows Rob to sit beside you with his arm around your shoulder, comforting you in ways only he can.
Rob's penchant for sorrow is well-exhibited on the moody "Now Comes the Night", where you experience an intimacy of Rob's voice solely over a piano.
RT produces a hauntingly beautiful epic on "All That I Am", a tearjerker for anyone deeply in love with someone who is enduring a great deal of pain. Rob's voice reaches depths never heard before on this song. Rob's love for his wife cuts straight through your heart, as you hear the heartache he has been experiencing through her battle with auto-immune.
On the romantic "Ever the Same", RT takes an atypical turn at love, creating a simply beautiful love song.
"When the Heartache Ends" is usual Rob fare, filled with angst and the need to be loved. Rob gives Matchbox fans something to love with "Problem Girl" a song destined to make Rob a real hearthrob with teenage girls.
The fun and catchy "Falling to Pieces" gives Rob a chance to show he's a little bit country, and a little bit rock n' roll.
RT emerges from behind the shadows with an impressive solo debut of immense proportions. Rob never misses on any song on this fine work, though some are more suited for certain moods than others. Rob understands the human psyche and id like no other in our generation, and offers a soundrack to anyone searching for something to be.
