Free Music Notes for Robbie Robertson

Free Music Review: grudgingly admitted masterpiece
Hit: 5 Stars

having read 'wheels on fire' mister robertson's portrait
does not hang in cool rocker guys gallery
and viewing 'the last waltz' only reinforces the imagery

but listening to robbie robertson's first solo effort it just isnt possible to not admit
the guy is a musical genius
altho i little doubt daniel lanois' production skills contributed a significant part

a couple tracks do skate pretty close to pretentiousness (e.g. robertson's spoken
verse in 'crazy river') but overall the music is so inventive and melodic
it's not difficult to see (or rather hear) how the guy's creativity played a big part
in the everlasting gravitas of the Band

robertson/lanois use a not so subtle rhythmic effect throughout the disc
heavy percussive drum notes on the beats and it works nicely to weave the songs together
somehow imparting a hot dry desert-air like feel - like a metronome on mescaline
i must say the effect is pleasurably hypnotic
and had me involuntarily keeping time with nodding head and ball of foot
a sort of low grade sonic peyote-like buzz at no extra charge
so thank you for that mister robbie man

as for the melodies robertson's use of heavyweight vocalists
to supplement his whispery voiced singing
makes this like listening to an allstar rock vocalist album: peter gabriel
the great bodeans & the guy who sings for u2 too

but the best and most beautiful vocal assist goes to rick danko who sings backup
on the the 2nd to last song 'sonny got caught'
a brilliant placement in the track listing too
after having heard so many other well known voices
such a familiar one connecting to robertson's past
really strikes an emotional chord
danko was such a one of a kind unvarnished gem of a singer

the entire disc is 'weighty' and by that i mean robertson's bona fides
bring both an expectation of and predisposition to quality stuff coming
like waiting for service after having been seated at a fine restaurant
and the experience here doesnt disappoint this is a talented artist
and what comes thru the speakers is impressive

it's a mix of ballads ('fallen angel' evidently inspired by
richard manuel's sad end) and uptempo cuts that flow well together i could easily imagine
all songs on fm radio or whatever mass audience format currently holds sway

but if one had to be picked for hard rockin' status it has to 'hell's half acre'
the thing has a foreboding introductory buildup then that snare drum starts pounding away and
in the imaginary desert's blacklit sky above
audio fireworks start bursting off silver & gold & purple contrails
(well at least in my mind's eye maybe it's the peyote talking)
the song is a battle anthem for young warriors of the heart
and while those days are long gone for unbraves like me 'hell's half acre'
is a rocker that does get the blood pumping still

so here's to robbie robertson a wholehearted respect and appreciation for the man's music
if not for the way the guy copped the songwriting credits from the Band portfolio
or the 'too cool for the room' air he seems to project about himself
but then again the man is a verifiably authentic rock&roll legend so whatdoiknow?

there're always two sides to every story sure but if roberston did indeed stiff his bandmates
fairsquare royalties it's very difficult to cheer the dude on
i guess it's called 'record business' for a reason but equal partners should divvy up equally
and if ever a band was a partnership of collaboration it was music of the Band

so rest in peace music legends rick danko and richard manuel
true artistry lives on even tho the artist is at sleep
the audio art created by danko helm hudson manuel and robertson will never grow old
even as all of us do
but robbie robertson here shows that on his own he can deliver too
for this is certainly a substantial work of rock&roll

Robbie Robertson Poster

The Band singer/songwriter's 1987 solo album debut, unavailable domestically. Guests include The Bodeans, Peter Gabriel, Maria McKee, Ivan Neville, & U2 with production by Daniel Lanois. 9 tracks. Includes a 16-page booklet with song lyrics & credits. Geffen. 2003.
Lightning does strike twice. Robbie Robertson's breathtaking 1987 solo debut was every bit as remarkable as another debut he'd masterminded two decades before, The Band's Music from Big Pink. Even more impressive was the fact that Robertson's new sound owed so little, other than a shared vision, to the sonic Americana he'd created with The Band. Robertson cashed in The Band's rustic tones in for a lush, beat-box womb created by coproducer Daniel Lanois. His own weird, almost spectral voice, also turned out to be the right vehicle for the words he'd been handing to others for so long. Bono, The BoDeans, and Peter Gabriel join in on keepers like "Fallen Angel" and "Broken Arrow." --Michael Ruby
