Free Music Notes for Ego Has Landed

Free Music Review: "It's a concept album. The concept being, it's terrific!"
Hit: 5 Stars

And it is. It's pop, it's rock, it's sweet, it's outrageous. Held together completely by a distinctive, charismatic style.
While once in awhile I scratch my head at some of the music that reaches the top of the UK charts (Afroman? Westlife? A Kylie Minogue song where 'la la la' is the refrain?), it is undeniable that some of the best music of the past and present has come from Great Britain, and while he may not have broken the U.S., Robbie Williams promises to lead the way for the future of British popular music.
'The Ego Has Landed' is a marvellous collection of songs from Williams' first two British albums (imports worth buying). A world apart from the embarrassing, pure pop of Take That, 'Ego' is a balanced mix of affecting ballads and fast pop/rock songs that consciously borrow from artists like Elton John ('Angels') to bands such as Oasis ('Lazy Days'). Robbie Williams and songwriting partner Guy Chambers have never pretended to be the most original team in the industry, but the undeniably catchy tunes they concoct are sold as much on the power of Williams' personality as they are his musical talent. Cheeky, self-deprecating, honest, funny and charismatic, Williams brands his music with a distinct and rebellious style that is infectious to say the least, but a rarity in the world of American pop music. Inspite of his perceived ego and self-regard, there is a sense that Robbie Williams is endearingly vulnerable and doesn't mind dropping hints to that effect, witness 'Angels' (his first big UK hit), 'Strong' and 'Karma Killer.' The more one learns about Robbie Williams and his colorful past, the more these songs resonate with and intrigue the listener. Unfortunately, most of the songs on 'Ego,' from the 'You Only Live Twice' derived, non-sensical 'Millennium' to the mournful 'No Regrets' are nothing like what litters the American Top 40 and Williams will probably never fully break the U.S. as a result. But that makes his albums all the more novel and fresh to the few who have discovered this artist's disarming talents. This album is not embarrassing to own, it's not mindless Britsh pap of the Steps variety, it's fun, unapologetic pop with unlikely charm and personality to boot, meant simply to entertain. Terriffic indeed.

Ego Has Landed Poster

Spanish version of 1999 collection, orignally released in the US only features one exclusive bonus track, 'Angels' (Spanish version). EMI. 2002.
Robbie Williams, a self-proclaimed casualty of the British boy-blitz Take That, scuffed his squeaky-clean image by rabble-rousing with Britpop troublemakers Oasis and reemerged as a part-James Bond, part-Frank Sinatra renaissance pop star. A little fast-living combined with his vocal charm, Williams's U.S. debut, The Ego Has Landed, offers a collection of cheeky, inescapably loveable songs served up with a nudge, a wink, and a pinch on the bum. --Beth Massa
Robbie Williams was a teenage pop star in the U.K. as a member of Take That (think New Kids on the Block); his first solo album, Life Thru a Lens, tanked--until the single "Angels" was released and became a mega-hit. His follow-up album, I've Been Expecting You, spawned more hits--"Millennium," "Let Me Entertain You"--and, somewhat unexpectedly, transformed Williams from prefab pop star to artist. The Ego Has Landed, his U.S. debut, collects songs from his two prior British releases and lives up to the hype. Though he's still somewhat prefabricated, borrowing wholesale from Oasis (whose Liam Gallagher was an idol of Williams's), George Michael, the Pet Shop Boys (whose Neil Tennant cowrote and sings backup on "No Regrets"), and even Tom Jones, Williams injects plenty of his own personality--brash and bold but rarely bratty. He's a born entertainer, plain and simple--"Let Me Entertain You," which would fit in well on Tommy, is plenty campy but only somewhat tongue-in-cheek, and he makes no apologies for it. The one caveat here is that the album is front-loaded, with all of the hits coming in the first half--but there's also a good chance that you won't mind. --Randy Silver
