Free Music Notes for EscapologyFree Music Review: Will Americans Finally Get Robbie? Hit: 5 Stars
Bad Boy Brit Robbie Williams is back with a new disc and a mature new sound. Not only is "Escapology" Robbie's best disc to date, it is the best album of the decade. Again collaborating with long-time songwriting partner Guy Chambers, Robbie has crafted a slick, tuneful CD awash in glorious harmonic invention and Robbie's trademark self-glorifying/deprecating lyrics. In contrast with his past work, "Escapology" is much more cohesive, and certainly comes from a darker place than his previous work. His much publicized (in Europe, anyway) flight to Los Angeles to escape problems with drugs and celebrity definitely paid off, in songs like "Monsoon", "Come Undone" and "Get a Little High", lyrical proof of the high price of celebrity. The crown jewel of the album is a 7-minute masterpiece entitled "Me and My Monkey," a Hunter Thompson-esque dream vision of Robbie on a road trip to Las Vegas with a monkey on his back. The haunting latin-tinged melody perfectly combines with a surreal tale of drugs, sex and rock and roll in Sin City, and evokes memories of "Hotel California" and Jack Kerouac while maintaining Robbie's signature humor and pathos. If, like 99.9% of the American public, you've never heard of Robbie Williams, this is a perfect introduction to his stunning voice and brilliant song crafting ability. If you're a Robbie fan, rejoice... it doesn't get any better than this. Note that the American release of "Escapology" differs quite a bit from the British release... both versions are required listening.
Free Music Review: Radio America Just Won't Get It Hit: 5 Stars
This was my introduction to Robbie Williams, and it happened by accident. I was getting the oil in my car changed and I had a half an hour to kill, so I went into a record store next door. I was in there for about 5 minutes when "Feel" started to play. "Great song" I thought, but didn't give it much thought. Then "Monsoon", "Sexed Up", "Get A Little High", "Come Undone", "Something Beautiful", and then the amazing "Love Somebody". WHO WAS THIS GUY??? I went to the counter and asked who's Greatest Hits album were they playing?(Yes, this CD is THAT good) 30 seconds later, I owned ESCAPOLOGY. What an amazing CD. I've since invested in all of his CDs. There are a lot of reviews here wondering why Americans don't embrace Robbie Williams the way they do in Europe. Simple. Radio stations don't play new music anymore. Classic rock won't play new albums by the old bands. Pop/hip hop stations will only play packaged, synthesized "artists". And adult contemporary stations, I don't know what their problem is. This guy should be to the 90's and today what Elton John was to the '70's. The songs are incredible, the production flawless. If you haven't discovered Robbie Williams yet, don't hesitate, buy ESCAPOLOGY now! One final word, "Love Somebody" is an incredibly haunting and beautifully arranged song. Truly a classic CD all around.

I've heard both versions of "Escapology" Hint: The full album can be heard on Robbie's website. Both versions are unbelievable. Buy "Escapology" right this minute, do you hear! You won't be disappointed. America wake up. You're missing something really special. Robbie is one of the most talented people on earth right now. His voice is soulful, his music is memorable and his lyrics are thoughtful. If that weren't enough, he has the body of a Greek g-d and enough charm for 10 men. Oh that I were about 30 years younger. Alas, I'm old enough to be his grandmother. I first heard that voice during the closing credits of "Bridget Jones's Diary" and wondered who was singing "Have You Met Miss Jones?" I was so captivated, I searched the Internet and bought "I've Been Expecting You." I'm totally blown away by his music. He's a healthy young lad who's taking full advantage of what the fates have brought him. All of us can live precariously through Robbie's great good fortune in Escapology, but Robbie also shows us that there are dangers and hypocrisy too. He's no fool, this Robbie. He's obviously got a good head on his shoulders. He may have his demons, but something tells me he'll be okay in the end. It gives me chills to think what he will bring us in the future. I can't wait.
Free Music Review: Worth A Listen...Several, In Fact Hit: 5 Stars
American success for Williams has been elusive...for reasons that pass my understanding. This is a brilliant collection of songs, handled with sincerity in some places and bombastic sarcasm in others."Something Beautiful" is the one that jumps out to me as U.S. single, although I don't know if that has happened yet. Bouncy and positive, it is the kind of upbeat pop song with some heft that were common in decades past but few if any have been able to pull off as of late. "Come Undone" is painful and introspective, but hauntingly beautiful as Williams wrestles with his inner contradictions ("...so well trained, so animal...so 'need your love', so 'f*^k you all'."). For those who enjoy the tongue-in-cheek Williams of the "Millenium" variety, there are gifts for you as well. "Handsome Man" contains a memorable wincer ("I'm the one who put the Brit in celebrity."), and "Monsoon" is more along the lines of self-deprecating humor ("I'm here to make money and get laid...yeah, I'm a star but I'll fade"). All in all, a great album with only a couple of clinkers (unlike some other folks, I found "Get A Little High" to be kind of obnoxious). Other recommended tracks include "Nans Song" and "One Fine Day."
Free Music Review: This Album is Bangin' Hit: 5 Stars
Man, this is a must buy, I don't care if you a Robbie Williams fan or not, this is the type of album you will not wanna take out of your CD player. I usually HATE this kinda music, I'm more of a rap guy. I listen to rap 24/7, but I've had this album for 2 days, and I ain't heard the first rap song. I bought this album along with 'Sing When You're Winning', and I ain't disappointed at all... actually, they're better than I thought. A German girl told me about him and played me a song by him, and I thought he was gay, but I like his music. The 2 best songs on this album are Feel, which is a love song, and Me and my Monkey, which is about him and his mokey checking into a hotel room in Vegas, then the monkey called and escort service. Then 3 monkey [prostitutes] came to the room and the monkey got him some monkey (...). And at the end of the song, Robbie and the monkey kill a Mexican named Señor Rodriguez. I recommend this album to whoever reads this. This guy is off the chain, he off the sheezy. If you like Robbie, this is a must have... if you don't like Robbie, this is still a must have. Ya'll need to cop this album, no lie, straight up. "How did I wind up with this f*ckin' monkey anyhow?" Robbie Williams, Me and My Monkey. Peace!
