Free Music Review: I could not be more impressed!!!
Hit: 5 Stars

When I first heard that Robert Downey, Jr. had released an album, I was skeptical to say the least. I listened to a few tracks and was immediately hooked!

I'll admit, the writing of the original songs was certainly not like the seasoned musicians that get hours upon hours of radio play, but then they, for the most part, don't write their own material. Keeping in mind that Robert wrote a lot of these, I found it was easy to get past the seemingly novice lyrics and realize it's more like a musical biography. The melodies are almost sultry and a little hypnotic at times. This is an album I can relax with! It's something DIFFERENT!!!

Vocally, I did not expect such a rich and colorful tone. His voice, at times, sounds like a perfect blend of Dave Matthews and a sober, younger Joe Cocker. To hear this absolutely took me by surprise. Never would I have guessed that a man with such a dark and comlex past and an almost sarcastic wit matched only by a new razor could produce a beautiful example of what you can do with a lot of hard work and creativity. And I'm not just talking about the music.

Bravo, Robert! And thank you for reawakening my love for exploring new music! THANK YOU!!!

Free Music Review: The Futurist is Downey Magic!
Hit: 5 Stars

The Futurist!

It's a masterpiece! It's a seductive, smoky, bluesy, sexy work of art!

It's pure Downey magic!

When Robert appeared on Good Morning America on November 24th, Diane Sawyer said, "He sings like a dream!" I agree with Diane!
He sings like a dream come true!

Robert has said, "...it would be wrong to believe that all the tunes are confessional, "I'm not necessarily speaking about myself..."

Although I'm sure that not every word in his songs is "confessional", I do think he's revealing his very sweet soul for us. This is a fantastic gift for those of us who are his fans, but I don't think it takes away from the universality of his themes.

His poetry and his music are for everyone.

This CD is a celebration of all things Downey! He's an unusually gifted actor, artist and musician. His talent appears to have no limits!

He's healthy and happy and he's only at the beginning of showing us what he can do!

Bring it on Robert!!!
We're behind you all the way! You are the Goods!

Free Music Review: Taken aback, and then reassured.
Hit: 5 Stars

After reading the New York Times feature promo on The Futurist, and cutting out that arresting photo, and after listening to a few clip samples, I bought it.
The first listen was a shocker. Could this be from the actor whose projects I like to follow, always impressed?
Yes. The lyrics genuine, the voice a gravel road to maneuver. Memories of Elton John from the Madman Across the Water period, Sting, Phil Collins, Tom Waits, Rufus Wainwright, riffs of Joni Mitchell? but no. It's an original. And the Yes cut!!! Take me back to college days.
Now I have bought more -- for the daughters in college to appreciate and share (and find the links to dad's insides via a newfound musical talent) and for fellow poetic lost souls with a left-leaning political agenda.
When was the last time I bought a recording at full price and then kept it in the changer for a very long time, and copied it onto the office computer to listen to it and drown out the co-workers' babble? Thank you to the artist!

Free Music Review: Wow
Hit: 5 Stars

I bought this album after reading a blog recommendation. Now I can't stop listening to it. It's on my computer, at work, home, in my car, on my I-Pod. The more I listen, the more I am drawn in by the poignancy of the lyrics, the bareness and emotional transparency, the humor that seeps from the edges of these songs. Downey sings to anyone who has experienced soul-crushing loss, battled demons, ached from loneliness and gotten up to do it again. His honey, smoke-and-whiskey voice is well suited to the style of these pieces. Although the orchestration is a bit heavy handed at times...I've found that it's grown on me. Several of the songs, such as the opening track (Man Like Me)and (Little Clownz) were immediately appealing, while others, (Kimberly Glides), and (Hannah) have become favorites over time due to their complexity and beauty. I highly recommend this album, particularly for those who are familiar with and enjoy Robert Downey, Jr.and his talent in other arenas.

Free Music Review: its good stuff!
Hit: 5 Stars

This a good solid album.

I have two degrees in music. I try always to have an open opinion about music because its tough for musical professionals to be open, we can be quite close-minded when give the circumstances.

Upon analysis of this cd, I'd have to say that the music is solid. What I mean by this is that the components of the music being made here are great. The lyricism, which can be tough to come by sometimes is done well. The work on the piano is excellent, he's no Cole Porter, but then who is? As a venture into the medium of music, its a good investment in someone who has taken their time and money and put out something that is worthwhile.
lyricism excellent.
musical elements good.
Voice is great. The voice doesn't have to resemble everyone else's voice in the industry, and as long as you are in tune, I think we're good, and that you are.

Overall its a good cd that I would recommend.
