Free Music Review: Pre-guitar-rock Palmer at his best

The pre-guitar-rock Palmer at his best. It presents Palmer, now comfortably in his relatively new Bahamas hometown after sojourns in NYC and New Orleans, relaxed and primed to give his best with his baritone-and whiskey-soul voice.
It contains his magnum opus and first chart hit, "Every Kinda People," which has been featured in remixed form in two other Palmer albums and is probably his best-loved hit in terms of its positive social message. Songwriter Andy Fraser (Free) becomes a soul/rock version of John Barry in penning just the right song, with the right build of drama, for the right vocalist. It was a template for Palmer's career right up until his untimely 2003 death from a heart attack.
The entire album had an island vibe, suitable for Palmer, who became a true pioneer at "third-world" music based in the Caribbean. A cynical $10 in Parker Bros. Monopoly money for the name of Palmer's label at release time. The Bahamas is all over the jaunty "Best of Both Worlds" even through its Philly-NYC disco sound. The style of the album is rich, not bland; it is more Nassau, the Bahamas. than Nassau County, Long Island. (Don't go there. I live in the latter Nassau and come from the former Nassau via the southern US.)
"Come Over" is a sexy, heavy breathing slow-burner with a great dance beat, while the "Where Can It Go?" and "You Overwhelm Me" are easy-listening in the best sense with piercing lyrics and lush strings that make them perfect for urban radio. The production is 1978 but holds up very well, especially on CD, and "You Overwhelm Me" is one of Palmer's all-time best, right up there with "Every Kinda People."
Vocalist Brenda Russell (from "Piano In the Dark" , the Michael Franks song "When I Give My Love To You") and the original "Get Here") is joined by her then-husband Brian Russell for two tracks on this Palmer album, "You Overwhelm Me" and "You're Gonna Get What's Coming." The latter hints at the rock direction Palmer's career would take, muting but not throwing away an emphasis on soul that would become one of Palmer's trademarks.
Palmer's taste for covers is reflected in his qjaunty funk/dance take on the Kinks' "You Really Got Me..." an arrangement that is pure Palmer but seems out of place on this smooth, brilliant collection of musical tracks, anchored by "Every Kinda People."
