Free Music Review: Great Socially-Conscious Robert Plant Solo Album

FATE OF NATIONS is a great solo CD by Robert Plant, and comes closer to what Led Zeppelin's next step would have been if drummer John Bonham had been able to overcome his alcoholism. This CD has most of what made Led Zeppelin what it was, such as Eastern influences, heavy guitars, and interesting sound effects; in fact, the only Zeppelin element missing is Jimmy Page, but Doug Boyle does an outstanding job of recreating Page's sound and style. Another element that surfaces here is a social/environmental conscience in the lyrics, which had never been the case in Plant's work before, as well as a tribute to his late son Karac, who had died in 1977. This CD's lyrics have inspired me to hang up pictures of pretty actresses as a deterrent to behaviors that could harm the world, because if I do that, it could harm me, too. In other words, this album teaches us that the FATE OF NATIONS is in our hands, and is our fate, too.

1993's FATE OF NATIONS features a cooler, quieter sound, tapping into Plant's love for folk music and history as well as Eastern chromatics, and displayed a socially conscious mindset. Stand-out songs include "29 Palms," "Calling To You," "I Believe," and "Come Into My Life," featuring Clannad's Maire Brennan on vocals and Richard Thompson on guitar.
