Free Music Review: Robert Plant's first (and best) solo album still sounds great 28 years on
Hit: 5 Stars

Led Zeppelin lead singer Robert Plant released his first solo album entitled Pictures at Eleven in June of 1982 on Led Zeppelin's record label Swan Song (distributed by Atlantic and WEA).
Following the untimely death of Led Zeppelin drummer John Bonham, the band decided that Bonham was irreplaceable and decided to disband Led Zeppelin out of respect for Bonham in December of 1980. While bass player John Paul Jones went on sabbatical from music, guitarist Jimmy Page delved into the soundtrack to Death Wish II (which was released in February of 1982 to limited success) and lead singer/lyricist Robert Plant retired to his family. In early 1982 he went back in the studio this time Rockfield Studios in Wales (where Rush had recorded their A Farewell to Kings and Hemispheres albums) to record Plant's first solo album. Joining Robert (who produces the album with engineer Pat Moran) are Robert's fellow Welsh musicians guitarist Robbie Blunt, bass player Paul Martinez and keyboard player Jezz Woodroofe (who was Black Sabbath's off-stage keyboard player from 1975-77). The drumming duties on the album are mainly handled by Genesis singer/drummer Phil Collins on six of the album's eight tracks (he's also on the bonus tracks) while ex-Rainbow and future Whitesnake/ELPowell/Brian May drummer (the late) Cozy Powell would drum on two of the tracks.
We begin the album with the album's first and biggest rock radio and MTV single "Burning Down One Side" which reminds listeners of Robert's latter days with Led Zeppelin. The song was the biggest hit from the album. Next is the nice ballad "Moonlight in Samosa" which has nice acoustic work from Blunt and nice music throughout the track with Robert singing his heart out. Next was the album's second single and another rock radio hit rocker called "Pledge Pin" which has a great guitar riff from Blunt, lyrics from Plant and also nice sax solos from Raphael Ravenscroft (famous for his sax solo on Gerry Rafferty's "Baker Street"). We close the first half with the nearly eight minute "Slow Dancer" which reminds me of Led Zeppelin's "Kashmir" and this too got loads of rock radio play over the years. Robert's vocals on this track shows he could still scream plus Blunt's guitar work is phenomenal as was the late Cozy Powell's drumming on this track reminds one of the late John Bonham.
We begin side two of the album with the six minute "Worse Than Detroit" which is driven by Blunt's slide guitar work and Phil Collins' superb drumming and Robert singing greatly and also playing some scorching harmonica here. Next is the drum machine driven "Fat Lip" which is a nice slower tempo number with Robert singing his heart out. We then go to "Like I've Never Been Gone" which is another great power ballad and the stars of this track were Robbie Blunt and Cozy Powell and lest not forget the star of the album Mr Plant himself. We close things with the uptempo rocker "Mystery Title" which is another great song driven by Blunt's guitar, Collins' drumming and Plant's vocals.
With Pictures at Eleven, Robert Plant proved that he would survive without Led Zeppelin. Pictures at Eleven is still (in my mind anyhow) his best solo album from a musical and lyrical standpoint and was successful commercially going to #3 here in the US in the summer of 1982 and also went Platinum (a million or so sold in copies) in its first year of release.
In 2006, the album was remastered and first re-released on the Nine Lives box set. Then in 2007 (to celebrate Pictures At Eleven's 25th anniversary), the remastered CD album was re-released individually with two bonus tracks. One was "Far Post" which was left off the album and the other a great live version of "Like I've Never Been Gone".
RECOMMENDED!

Pictures At Eleven Poster

Plant's solo debut, 1982's PICTURES AT ELEVEN, hit #5 on BillboardŽ's pop albums chart, and featured the talents of blues guitarist Robbie Blunt and Phil Collins on drums. Stand-out tracks include "Burning Down One Side," "Pledge Pin," and "Slow Dancer." Two bonus rarities include a live version of "Like I've Never Been Gone" and "Far Post."
