Free Music Review: Won't Be Opening For Long . . .

I went to see the Black Crowes in concert, and RRFB was one of the opening acts. What a treat!!!
I had never heard of this band before, but they put on an awesome show: tight, enthusiastic, funky music played by musicians that obviously love what they do. What a great band!
They were by far the best band that night.
Who do they sound like? Well, no one I know right off hand. They aren't derivative, and they don't seem to be trying to copy anyone else. Their music has elements of blues, funk, world, and rock. Powerfunkblues? They strike me as an original combination of these elements, and they don't sound like anyone else. They sound like Robert Randolph and the Family Band.
At the show, I enjoyed watching all of the band, as it was clear that each member was an expert musician, and very, very good at what they do. They also seem to be having the time of their lives while doing it.
The next day, I bought all their CDs. I play the crap out of 'em: parties, cookouts, in the car, dancin' with my kids. The music is uplifting, optimistic, and it passes the Rum Boogie Club (love Memphis) test: play it loud, and those that aren't toe-tappin', finger-snappin', or clappin' - well, they're probably dead.
This is my favorite of their albums. There really isn't a bad cut on the album (and how many recent albums can you say that about?), but some songs really stand out: I Need More Love, Squeeze, and Smile.
Squeeze has become one of my favorite songs, one that's loaded into my computer, my Shuffle, my iPod, and burned onto CDs for play in my car. It's one of those instrumentals that are so good you can almost hear the lyrics.
