This recording is that good. Rarely, do I purchase a CD and enjoy all the tracks. But this is the whole deal.
Firstly, about the sound quality. Although this recording was made in 1984, the Deutsche-Grammophon sound is clear, full, and crisp. So that leaves you free to enjoy the experience of the performance.
Now about the performance. This is the most extraordinary Kreisleriana I have ever heard. I can't do it justice, but here are some adjectives that come to mind: beautiful, tender, wise, raw. This performance is thought-invoking and alive.
When I put this recording on, if I'm doing something, I inevitably find myself just listening later. It's really astoundingly beautiful, both the score & the playing. The way Argerich sinks into the chords and slips into quiet, savoring the sound & the silence, is satisfying and right. I don't know how she can sing from a very human place yet also be a technical goddess... Even her silences are thoughtful, musical pauses.
It's an honor to hear Argerich's brave and revealing performance because the connection she has to the music is palpable, even through an old recording. She doesn't always record well, but for this one, I feel honored to own this CD and listen.
As a side note, I love the photograph of her on this CD cover. She looks a bit stoned, doped up from so much Schumann!
Oh, and the Kinderszenen is also a treat. Every kid learning how to play piano was tortured at some point to learn this, so there were bad associations for me. I finally heard, through Argerich, why those pieces are deep and timeless.
