Free Music Review: Thicke's Therapy Session

For starters this is the first Robin Thicke album I ever purchased.s It's a perfect example of my own personel musical prejiduces. Knowing how much I loved what I'd heard of Robin Thicke do before. And considering the fact I didn't have any of his CD's made the knowledge of this particular album particularly appealing. On the other hand once I read the back of the CD I started worrying. When an artist like Robin Thicke,whose been largely self dependant does an album openly flaunting guest hip-hoppers such a Jay Z,The Game and Nicki Manage my "modern R&B sellout" lights flash a bit heavy in my face. And this is not just some fan of 70's/early 80's music complaining. It actually took me about 30 minutes,since it was on impulse and I wasn't able to preview cuts that I made a swoop and honestly had instant concerns I'd soon regret my purchase;as I said it would not have been the first time that's happened. After having heard it on the hour long car trip home I must say this not only far exceeded my highest expectations (which weren't that high) but the flaws it did have were not at all where I expected them to be. Thicke,whose been long labeled as a "retro" performer has decided to modernize his sound with a hip-hop flavor. Luckily he shows very few signs he intends to surrender to any stereotyped egotism on the side of the guests. In the end this turns out to be an album mixing songs featuring his band as well as ones using modern sampling synthesizers and such. No matter how much you try to maintain the albeit excellent retro 70's sound you have to let some modern technological concepts into the equasion. Even still the sound of the opener "Mr.Sexy","Luv Birds" and the wonderfully Brazillian flavored "Jus Right" really gets the spirit of the early 70's sweet funk Thicke loves along with some of the hissing sighs of R&B vocalizing used from the 80's on. A lot of the best ideas on this album comes out of experimentation with guests I honestly thought would spoil the album. "Meiple" has Thicke with Jay Z and a rhythm structure that has a lot of ideas not only from funk but afro-caribbean hip-hop styles that go with it very well. "Make U Love Me" and "Rollacoasta" with Estelle extend somewhat on the 80's based sound that Justin Timberlake's FutureSex / LoveSounds and Kayne West's 808s & Heartbreak looked towards only with a more stripped down style production. It really brings to mind how much 70's flavor there was in 80's music anyway. "It' In The Mornin'" has Thicke and Snoop Dog finding a pretty successful middle ground between 70's inspired hip-hop and 70's funk-the latter a style both artist and guest have a strong understanding with. Interesting enough the weak points in the album comes in the middle. I appreciate the psychedelic flavor Kid Cudi brings to "Elavatas" but that and "Shakin It 4 Daddy" just come off a too lyrically trashy and musically abrasive and don't really give Thicke himself much of a chance to express much about what he's looking to do. Now even though "Million Dolla Baby" blatantly rips from Marvin Gaye's song Trouble Man butmas we've seen with John Legend's P.D.A. (We Just Don't Care) sometimes it isn't merely a matter of ripping off a classic song and actually functions better as a musical tribute,especially if it's part of an album where there are a lot of original musical ideas with a similar flavor such as this one. The album ends with the funky/rap send up of "Diamonds" featuring The Game. It's not a perfect album but,since it's few flaws lay in it's sense of experimentation musically I suppose the ends do justify the means and it's an album more then worth hearing and a sure fire sign the "new music" scene is starting to seriously improve!
