Free Music Review: Beyond The Crunch Chord

This may disappoint those familiar with the first 3-4 albums. This is a move in a departure from crunch chord rhythms. This has a very soulful, funk groove. Like the best bands, Trower merely absorbed the latest trends while at the same time remaining true to his roots. The vocals are soulful as usual thanks to late,great underrated James Dewar. Possibly back to even earlier roots - the Paramounts were an R&B band of the early 60's. This clearly shows an appreciation of early 60's soul groups with lots of somewhat mellower Hendrix guitar sounds going on. (I could have lived without "King of The Dance" but you can't have everything).
It is, as I said, common to indulge the trends in their music rather than rebel against them. Remember the Stones doing soul, disco or whatever you want to call it and realize that this is better, simply because Trower is nowhere near as overexposed as the Stones. It's an album that rocks without being hard on the ears. This was simply the next step in the evolution of the Trower/Dewar songwriting team.
Two albums for the price of one is a bargain and the guitar work still sizzles as Trower knows just how to play those funk rhythms and make them his own.
