Free Music Review: Surprisingly Good Collection, A Few Nit-Picky Complaints

Of all of the greatest hits collections, the producers of this one surprisingly remembered Trower's great 1975 album "For Earth Below," an album that went under-recognized because of the recent huge sucess of 1974's "Bridge of Sighs." "For Earth Below" began with a killer rockin song "Shame The Devil" which just blows you out the window. They have included that one plus 3 other tracks from that album. I applaud them for doing that, as other collections left out that album completely, including the opening song I mentioned. Unfortunately, the other outstanding track from that album "Alethea," they have included the live version and not the studio version, which is 10 times better than the live one. The studio version grooves beyond belief, while the live recording is not that good, too fast, pale by comparison, and does not present the song well to people who don't know it. More minor complaints: From the album "Long Misty Days," they left out one of the best tracks "Caledonia," in lieu of the much less entertaining "Pride." The remix of the 1973 song "Daydream" has so much reverb on James Dewar's voice (and mixed so low) that you can't enjoy the song or hear his classic vocal. Also why did they choose the song "Hannah" from that album? Finally, to recognize Trower's later 70's albums they chose 2 songs from his 1977 album "In City Dreams" but not one from the 1978 album "Caravan To Midnight." They could have chose "Lost In Love" or ended the collection with "Sail On," both from "Caravan" but instead ended it with "Bluebird" from "In City." The liner-notes writer says that those 2 albums were "mixed bags" so I guess that was their criteria. There is not one song from the 1983 album "Back It Up" (Benny Dancer would have been awesome.) But again the liner-notes say that album "sounds uninspired." But for a runtime of 72 minutes, this is the best of the Robin Trower collections.
Essential Poster
Based on his subtle playing on Procol Harum's "A Whiter Shade of Pale," no one expected Robin Trower to become an arena-rock guitar god in the '70s--a guitarist, in fact, that some pundits compared to Jimi Hendrix. Trower certainly was very much influenced by Hendrix; he loved throwing atonal fireworks into his blues-based rock, as all 16 tracks here demonstrate. Essential is the best U.S. compilation available, with tracks from all eight of his Chrysalis LPs. The only problem is that '70s and '80s FM staple "Day of the Eagle" is absent. Which is a little like calling an album Essential Hendrix and excluding "All Along the Watchtower." --Bill HoldshipPop Music CDs
