Free Music Review: Trower's funk/rock classic

Since the most common found copies of these albums are usually paired up, this review will cover them both. Trower's follow up his very successful Bridge Of Sighs album, For Earth Below, released in 1973, featuers new drummer Bill Lordan who had a more funk edge to his playing than Reg Isadore. Nowhere is that more apparant than on the opening groove rocker Shame The Devil, a great more underlooked Trower cut. Once again the bands returns to familar territory on the slow churner It's Only Money. Heavy on ambience and a back up chant... it sounds familiar but has a different sort of approach to the style. Confessin' Midnight also explores the more funkier rock that surprisingly Trower would fully transform into on his mid/late 70's album. But here it has a more barnburning feel to it. With extended guitar solo/jam sections. This album rocks nonstop with inspired performances and songs.
Fine Day another nice groove/rocker, more toned down a bit though, it has a fine vocal from Dewar and some awesome ride cymbal work from Lordan which would also be a huge highlight on the Hendrix inspired rocker Gonna Be More Suspicious, Another one of those "how is this not more famous kick ass rocker" type songs. Its meant to be played very LOUD. The riff slightly angry fitting the title of the tune. Alethea, another on of those songs much like Lady Love, has a more radio rock feel to it. Its no different in nature than the other songs but it seems more fit for a single. There were really 3 type of Trower songs. The slow 'floating' type blues songs, the heavy grooving rockers, and the mid tempo radio style songs. Songs that rocked but sort of cut back on the more jam type sections featured so prominatly on his main cuts. The album is rounded out beautifully with A Tale Untold, which although far from disco, has a very danceable type rock sound, the highhat work from Bill Lordan withiout a doubt reveals him to be a more funk trained drummer and that is explored more in this album which is the perfect melding of the bands early heavy rock material mixed with his later more subdued funk sound. The title track once again shoots you another of dose of dreamy slight psychedelic blues.
The live album recorded in 1974, in Sweden, isnt a throwaway live record at all. But a great show that captures the band in its prime. Trower on stage, you'll find is actually better than on the record. His patent style of slow songs (skip the descriptive adjectives this time) sound better in a live setting. Even the opener Too Rolling Stone, which is from Bridge Of Sighs betters the studio counterpart, as does this version of A Little Bit Sympathy which has a truely kicking ass breakdown groove section. Not being in the studio of course, offers the 3 piece band in its stripped down guitar/bass/drums state. Without the many overdubs they would do off the stage. So if you prefer your rock more raw, this is for you. Any fan of live 70's hard rock, this is essential. Its a shame there isnt a shiney 2 CD reissue that has the entire show because we know well and good the band didnt only play for 45 minutes. Once again, these albums are must have's. Do not miss them. Weather it's Dewars amazing vocals and bass grooves, Trower's amazing guitar or the charismatic drumming and thunderous sound these guys make. It's rock at its finest.
