Free Music Notes for For Earth Below/LiveFree Music Review: Tower Of Trower... Hit: 5 Stars
When I was barely a teen pup, I went to my first concert in upstate New York, and it was Robin Trower. (Starz and Starcastle opened for him!) It was a simple, straightforward power trio...with Dewar to the left, Bill Lordan and his green kit in the center, and Trower off to the right. Boy, did these guys HOLD the stage. It was 1976, and Trower was in the tower of his creative power, and I suspect the muse was hovering the closest to him during this period ('75-76). For anyone who never saw him live during this period, this two disc set will be your ticket to his extraordinary grace and now legendary live performances. Was there ever a better vocalist for his style than James Dewar? Hear for yourself. Listen to the bear weep on "Daydream', after the plowing and reckless "ballet" of "Too Rolling Stoned". You'll leave it all wanting more. Easily, one of the best two disc sets you could purchase in all of the rock canon. The era of players like Trower is all of over, but you can relish the past with this token of vindication.
Free Music Review: No he does not sound like Jimi but he sounds 5 Stars
ROBIN TROWER!! I can see where the influences can be (use of the Univibe, Fuzzface, etc) but he stands alone in his "quality of sound".And great tunes also! He always has a great sound, plays with great style, and gives 100% on everything he plays (Isn't that the three ingredients of any great musical artist?) I wore out my LP version of "Live" when I was a kid and still get the same hair raising feeling when I hear it today. The track order of this disc should be tracks 9-15 first then tracks 1-8. "Live" should have been first so if you buy this, listen to it in that order. He is a true virtuoso of the instrument with a unique vibrato. Any electric guitarist that uses effects will learn something from this recording. Check out also James Dewar's bass playing and vocals,(especially the last chorus of "I Can't Wait Much Longer"...Whew!) and Bill Lordan's drumming.(Solo at the end of "Alethea"!!!) Check it out! Also recommend: Robin Trower/ "Bridge Of Sighs"
Free Music Review: You'll like these two Hit: 5 Stars
Do you like Robin Trower? Did you like him when he was lead for Procol Harum? If you answered yes to both or even the first question then chances are good you'll like these two albums if you haven't heard them yet. If you have and wore out your vinyl like I did then this is a great way to get this music back into your library.
For Earth Below is the Title song and it's a great one. Reminds me of Bridge of Sighs in a way. Same sort of brooding majesty to it. Robin is a very melodic guitarist. He has an uncanny way of using Univibes, Chorus and Flangers. He gets sounds out of a Marshall that I've never heard anyone else do. There's nothing bad on either album or CD or whatever the hell you want to call it. They're both excellant. Like I said if you like Twice Removed From Yesterday and/or Bridge of Sighs then you will not be dissappointed with these two. Buy 'em.
Free Music Review: Trower: Overlooked & Underrated Guitar Master! Hit: 5 Stars
Poor Robin Trower; He started his band when the music public was still mourning Jimi Hendrix, so he never got a fair shake during the 70's. The fact that bassist/vocalist James Dewar bore a similarity to the then huge Bad Company singer Paul Rodgers was another strike against the group. Now with the passage of time, a reassessment of the Trower catalogue is in order. These excellent 2-on-1 discs from BGO are an economical way to get and discover that these records are some of the finest of the era. Dewar's emotive, soulful voice is a revelation, and the songs are good too. The tight ensemble playing of the 3 musicians (an absolute necessity in a power trio) sounds as fresh and exciting as when these were recorded. You can throw away a lot of music that sounds dated and forced after getting back on the Trower bus; HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!!!
Free Music Review: Probably the best AxeMan in the business- A must have Hit: 5 Stars
Trower was trashed for being a Hendrix clone. Nothing could be further from the truth. While Hendrix was totally drugged out and playing his blues in the majors, Trower played in the minors. For music fans, the difference is striking and inspirational. Trower's licks are clean and subtle. Powerful, yet understated. For anyone who loves the pure power and seductive properties of the electric guitar, this is a must have album. I have been looking for this CD for a while, as my son is an aspiring guitarist. This is an expample of how the instrument was supposed to be played. Too Rolling Stoned is perhaps the anthem, but other pieces are much more impressive - such as Ballerina. Get it, grab the headphones, turn out the lights and just be amazed.
