Free Music Notes for Rocky Balboa: The Best of RockyFree Music Review: Not quite what I wanted Hit: 3 StarsThe disc was OK, but content was not what I expected - was looking for the instrumental score for the movie Rocky Balboa, but the disc didn't have the songs I wanted. Files wouldn't play in my older CD player. Otherwise, it was OK.
Free Music Review: "Cut me Mick".................. Hit: 3 Stars"Cut me Mick" because I don't see all of the best tracks on this CD. This CD has a good mix of music tracks from the Rocky series but there are alot of the the better tracks missing. "Philadelphia Morning", "First Date". "Take you back", "Vigil", and Eye of the Tiger. How can you leave out these emotion filled tunes??? I wish they would've made this a 2-CD collection. Just about all of the tracks from Rocky I should be included because it gave the audience an emotional picture about Rocky's life and what he was going through. Oh well, not to shabby but could've been great! I gotta go work out now.....that's what these tunes do to you.
Free Music Review: good collection of songs from the films Hit: 4 StarsOverall, this is a good collection of songs and themes from the Rocky films. My one criticism is that there a bit too many (approximately three) rehash versions of Bill Conti's "Gonna Fly Now" (the original Rocky theme song) on the tape. There are other music themes from the Rocky films that could have been included in their place....
Free Music Review: Great music Hit: 5 StarsAnyone who likes music of all types will like this album. Bill Conti and others really know their music. It's a powerful mixture of inspiration, reflection, challenge, and finally triumph. All major themes are clear, strong, and 'humable'. You'll find that these tunes will play in your head often, bringing strength and hope for your own life.
Free Music Review: A good collection of Rocky music despite some omissions Hit: 4 StarsRocky Balboa (1976-2006.) A compilation covering the best music of the Rocky films.
INTRODUCTION:
The Rocky franchise is a classic film series that has stood the test of time. With this series, Sylvester Stallone created a string of masterpieces for the ages. With the release of the latest installment in the series, it seemed only natural to release a collection of the finest pieces of music from the series.
OVERVIEW:
Rocky Balboa was released in December of 2006. The compilation covers pieces of music from the entire Rocky film franchise, from 1976-2006.
REVIEW:
It's tough to throw together a "best of" release for the Rocky films, since the films all have a ton of great music. Despite some gaping omissions, and the fact that the compilation doesn't fill the full eighty minutes you can fit on a CD, it still stands as a strong contender. It's definitely superior to the old "best of Rocky" compilation.
One complaint I have about this compilation that I feel needs to be addressed is that many of the tracks have dialogue stuck on the ends. Not a huge issue, but it's definitely annoying.
All tracks by Bill Conti except for those stated otherwise.
-ROCKY (1976)
TRACKS INCLUDED: Gonna Fly Now, Going the Distance, Alone in the Ring, Fanfare for Rocky
COMMENTS: If there's one thing that pisses me off about this compilation more than anything else, it's that it omits Take You Back, one of the main anthems of the franchise! Apollo Creed's entrance music Marine Hymn/Yankee Doodle is also MIA. Fortunately, most of the good tracks from the movie make the cut.
-ROCKY II (1979):
TRACKS INCLUDED: Redemption, Overture
COMMENTS: Just two tracks from the second film's soundtrack. They're two of the best so I'm not complaining though. Still, I would have liked to see the "childrens choir" version of Gonna Fly now.
-ROCKY III (1982):
TRACKS INCLUDED: Eye of the Tiger (Survivor), Mickey, Conquest, Adrian
COMMENTS: You can't have a Rocky compilation that doesn't have Eye of the Tiger on it, which is the quintessential rock anthem that represents the series. The Mickey instrumental is a melodic masterpiece I'm glad didn't get omitted. My only complaints? They didn't include the actual demo version of Eye of the Tiger from the film, or the instrumental version from the Apollo's gym training scenes.
-ROCKY IV (1985):
TRACKS INCLUDED: Living in America (James Brown), Hearts on Fire (John Cafferty), No Easy Way Out (Robert Tepper), Burning Heart (Survivor)
COMMENTS: The weakest Rocky film has the best soundtrack. And it's represented well with all the major pop hits. The big problem though? NO TRACKS FROM VINCE DICOLA'S SCORE WERE INCLUDED! What were they smoking when they decided to leave these off?
-ROCKY V (1990):
TRACKS INCLUDED: Can't Stop The Fire
COMMENTS: Worst Rocky soundtrack ever, but they managed to get one salvageable track. Sadly though, The Measure of a Man (by Elton John) has to sit this one out.
-ROCKY BALBOA (2006):
TRACKS INCLUDED: It's A Fight (Three Six Mafia)
COMMENTS: A horrid track that just seems out of place in the Rocky universe. Why'd we get this instead of Somebody Told Me by the Killers, a far better song featured in the film?
-OTHER:
TRACKS INCLUDED: Gonna Fly Now (Remix)
COMMENTS: A pointless and unnecessary remix that does nothing to improve the song. If it ain't broke don't fix it!
OVERALL:
Overall, a good "Best of Rocky" CD that puts the old Rocky Story compilation to shame. If you want all the best music from the Rocky series in one place, aside from a few small issues, this is the best CD to go with.
Thumbs up.
EDITION NOTES:
This is a recent release, so you shouldn't have any trouble finding it in many major retailer of CDs.
