Free Music Notes for Rocky IV: Original Motion Picture SoundtrackFree Music Review: Beware: Different than the original release! Hit: 4 Stars
Advertised as a remastered re-release, longtime fans of the original release of this soundtrack may be unpleasantly surprised to learn that most of the songs appear to have been somewhat remixed as well. While the remastered sound quality is excellent, giving many of the songs, especially the Vince Di Cola instrumentals, a fuller and richer sound, almost every song appears to have been altered from its original form in some way. While some of the changes are rather subtle, a few songs are noticeably different. "The Sweetest Victory" is vastly inferior to that of the original release, something I found particularly disappointing given that the song was always one of my favorites from this album.
Still one of the better soundtracks of the 80's, but if you're looking for the original soundtrack, this version may not be what you want. Also, unless you're a collector, I wouldn't recommend buying it just to have the added Survivor song. It's a ballad that was probably cut from the film for good reason.
This album still earns 4 stars for it's sentimental and inspirational value, but that's one less star than I'd give to my old, worn out cassette.
Free Music Review: almost as inspiring as the movie Hit: 4 Stars
I enjoyed the music from Rocky IV. The Training Montage, War, and No Easy Way Out a great deal. Living In America was FANTASTIC. The other songs on the disc were fine, but those four formed a great loop in my head. When I'm doing something physical I'll mentally replay them and they provide a great pick me up. I'd recommend this to any Rocky fan, and also to anyone looking to find great music for a workout.
Free Music Review: Not the music people usually associate with Rocky, but IV has its own charm Hit: 3 Stars
To most fans of the Rocky franchise, the music found in the first and second Rocky film are the best soundtracks out of the entire series. I can understand that because the first two soundtracks in the 1970's were so innocent, pure and have some great instrumentals as well. With the 1980's the series shifted in a different direction and so did the music in the films, Rocky III featured more popular music and 1990's Rocky V soundtrack had some rap in it. While the first Rocky is an undeniable cinematic masterpiece and remains the favorite Rocky film, Rocky IV had its own charm and was a great movie as well. The soundtrack is particularly memorable for the montages that were in the movie, it's also very good 1980s popular music in general and catchy songs as well.
One of the most famous soundtrack songs of all time has to be Survivor's "Eye of The Tiger" which debuted on the Rocky III soundtrack and makes a second appearance here. "Burning Heart" from Survivor was in Rocky IV, a good rock track, and on this edition of Rocky 4 "Man Against The World" has also been included. "No Easy Way Out" is a good, catchy 80's song, I loved it in the movie it fit the scene it was in so well. Got to hand it to Vince Dicola (more famous for his work on the Transformers series in the 80's) his compositions for the soundtrack are nothing short of epic: "War" and "Training Montage" were terrific songs and highlights of not only the soundtrack but the movie as well. Some songs here are great for a workout as well, for instance "Hearts on Fire" and "Training Montage" are sure to get you fired up and sweating. I love the inclusion of James Brown here, "Living In America" is a great song and it had a nice part in the movie in which Brown himself appeared and sang the song. However some of the material here is slightly edited to be shorter and the sound has been remastered, I think the sound is very good and while I would've preferred the songs to be left as they were I don't think the editing really ruins anything.
This is probably not the music that the Rocky series is best remembered for but it's memorable and has its own charm. The musical sound that is on the soundtrack for Rocky IV is very rooted in the 1980's, it sounds like music of its era which is great, it's almost like a time capsule for popular music in 1985! If you're visiting this page you probably have a good idea of this soundtrack, I suggest that you buy it if you're a collector or if you were someone who enjoyed the songs featured in Rocky IV. If you're not a fan of 1980's music I say stay far away! You could also go for "Rocky Balboa: The Best Of" (4 songs from Rocky IV) or "The Rocky Story" (6 songs from Rocky IV) who both have a few songs from Rocky IV, rating : 3.5/5.
Free Music Review: A Fair and Honest Review Hit: 3 Stars
Ok, let me start by defeating some of the claims against this release. It's not as "different" as the reviews make it out to be. In fact, most of the "differences" are improvements. First and foremost, the remastering improves the sound noticably but is not overdone. To give a fair review, here's a track by track comparison of this remastered version to the original.
1. Burning Heart (Same)
2. Hearts On Fire (Same)
3. Double Or Nothing (Intro has been fixed)
4. Eye Of The Tiger (Plays 17 seconds longer!)
5. War (Same)
6. Living In America (Intro has been fixed)
7. No Easy Way Out (Same)
8. One Way Street (Same)
9. The Sweetest Victory (The only major difference, this song has been entirely remixed - it's not better or worse to me, just different)
10. Training Montage (Same)
11. Man Against The World (Bonus track, cut from film and not on original release of soundtrack)
There you have it, that's the run down. While I personally love this new remastered edition, the CD loses one star for not including the original mix of The Sweetest Victory and another star for not including more of the films music, such as Apollo's Death and the extended version of Heart's On Fire. A five star tracklist would have included everything on the original release PLUS Man Against The World, Heart's On Fire (Extended) and Sweetest Victory (Remix) and the other neglectic music all as bonus material.
Free Music Review: Not What I Remember Hit: 3 Stars
I had this CD years ago and it got lost in the shuffle. I bought another copy and I can say it is not the same. Some songs are missing, and there are some new ones that I am not particularly fond of. Its pretty good overall, but this version doesnt even have "Gonna Fly Now." Its blasphemy I tell you. Be aware of what you are buying, this version is different.
