Free Music Notes for It Had to Be You... The Great American SongbookFree Music Review: Rod Captures the Classics And Redefines Romance Hit: 5 Stars
How could Rod Stewart dare to release these classic tunes that belong to Sinatra, Bennett, and the great voices of the 20th century? Would it be his downfall? Far from it. Not only has he made these songs his own, but with his uniquely raspy yet soothing voice he has redefined the most romantic songs of all time. This has become my favorite CD ever, one I cannot get enough of. Not only is Rod's voice showcased as never before, but he has selected songs that evoke memories of lovers long past, moments alive only in memories, and the ache that broken hearts recognize. Rod delivers these beautiful songs with a smoldering passion, a brooding sense of loss that touches my heart everytime I play this one....which is every day. It's sexy, it's soothing, it's nostalgia to the ultimate level. Simply put, this has got to be the greatest Rod Stewart collection ever. And, in my opinion, the greatest CD ever.
Free Music Review: Rod Stewart Shines On The Old Standards Hit: 5 Stars
Rod Stewart's voice lends itself to these tunes beautifully. He delivers the songs in a style that is easy going yet heartfelt. He lacks the affectations and pretentiousness so many "pop" artist tend to adopt when attempting standards. His distinctive voice on these recordings seems to have an underlying quality of pure velvet; I would love to hear him do such songs as "Lullabye of Birdland" and "Dream a Little Dream" but for the moment I'm thrilled particularly with "You Go to My Head", "These Foolish Things" and "The Way You Look Tonight"...outstanding on this CD which is all quite good stuff. Just for fun, anyone reading this review who has never listened to Harry Nilsson's "A Little Touch of Schmilsson in the Night" will probably get a kick out of his rendition of "It Had to be You" with its humourous twist.
Free Music Review: The reviewers have it wrong..GREAT ALBUM!!! Hit: 5 Stars
I read most of the other reviews in here of this album. I seriously think that what Rod Stewart possesses is the ability to make music sound more heart felt with his type of voice and the way it is presented. This is a great album. He sings these songs by adding his own interpretation to it, while staying true to the arrangements and vocal stylings of that era of music. I'm 29 years old, have listened to all the greats of this genre, and think this album is the best by ANY performer Iv'e heard. That said, the people who review this material should have another listen..I don't get how someone can say Rod can't sing, or doesn't posess one of the better voices in music..The problem is, most artists today DO NOT posess their own distinct sound and that is why Rod has been around for years..He does have a distinct voice and THAT makes him a true performer..Thanks for your time!
Free Music Review: The BEST Love Songs Done By The Best Artist! Hit: 5 Stars
I met my now fiance in Sept 2002. The next Month Rod's "Great American Songbook I" came out. I bought us both a copy and it instantly became "Our CD" The music from this CD has taken us though many happy, romantic, and bumpy times.. even the death of my Mom who loved many of these songs from her past. We both Plan to have our first dance as man and wife to "Just the way you look tonight" played from the CD. I also just got us both Volume II. These CD's are worth more than gold! I wish I could tell Rod Stewart THANK YOU in person! I can't believe the folks that gave Rod poor reviews! This CD went DOUBLE PLATINUM! That in itself tells you what a GREAT CD this is. I Can't wait for Volume III! I just hope Rod will sing "Fly Me To The Moon" for my sweetie. The music lives on in our hearts and always will.Kelly & soon to be Debbie Council
Free Music Review: Great Songs, Great Voice Hit: 5 Stars
After listening to this CD for a week now, I can't tell you how it has grown on me. Although, these songs have been performed by many "smooth" crooners, Stewart interperates his versions of these songs so well that you can now look at them in a new light. The more popular tunes like "The Way You Look Tonight", "It Had To Be You", "The Very Thought of You" and "The Nearness of You" now have meaning to me and I no longer look at them as old standards. "These Foolish Things" is another catchy highpoint along with "That's All". For the casual Stewart fan it may take some time to get past the fact that this is the guy who sang "Hot Legs" and "Stay With Me". However, if you can get past that fact, you will discover a "pleasant surprise".
