Free Music Notes for Rodgers and Hammerstein's South Pacific (The New Broadway Cast)

Free Music Review: Great Album -- and the Show Is Even Better!
Hit: 5 Stars

I bought this with a certain amount of foreboding, because of the recent Reba McIntyre/Brian Stokes Mitchell recording where Reba decided to change Hammerstein's "Wonderful Guy" lyrics. But WOW! This is the only reading of the score that comes close to the 1949 original. The Rodgers & Hammerstein score is a hit parade unto itself, and it positively gleams here. The singers are excellent and the Robert Russell Bennett orchestrations bring back a sound Broadway hasn't heard in years, one which puts the present anemic-sized pit bands to shame. Two more notes: (1) Mary Martin may not have been a raving beauty if photos from the era are to be believed, but she was one of those stars who could light up a stage just by walking onto it. Gertrude Lawrence was another who could do the same. So let's stop insulting her. On the album, she is luminous. (2) When I saw the actual production onstage, it was even better than the album. It was a modern production that didn't try to "revisal" the show into something reflecting the director's "vision." Bartlett Sher brought out new aspects of the show as written. That's why it's such a big hit; Mr. Sher had faith in the show. It's called trusting Richard Rodgers and Oscar Hammerstein 2nd.

Free Music Review: South Pacific Shines
Hit: 5 Stars

Kelli O'Hara, Paulo Szot and Danny Burstein really shine in this production of South Pacific. I purchased the recording in hopes of being transported back to the production I was fortunate enough to see. First, if you can get tickets, go. You will not be disappointed.

On the recording, there is a bit more restraint than the stage production. The intonations are more subtle so good listen conditions are helpful to really appreciate the performance. Paulo is flawless but it's Kelli who will win your heart. Kelli's rendering of the songs is beautiful. She conveys a youthful innocence on some, others an exuberance of a young girl in love. I loved her performance. Danny Burstein's "There is Nothing Like a Dame" was amazing on stage and while the CD is extremely good, it was a little disappointing on the recording.

Does it succeed in transporting me back? I suppose most moments in time can't be relived. Still, I would purchase the CD again. This performance of South Pacific made me a Kelli O'Hara fan. It may well make you a convert too.

Free Music Review: What A Broadway Musical Is !!!!!
Hit: 5 Stars

This show still puts the likes of Spring Awakening, Young Frankenstein, In The Heights and nearly every other show of the past couple of years, to shame. In 60 more years will anyone remember any of the garbage from Spring Awakening? A revival of Passing Strange on Broadway? I doubt it.

I recently had the pleasure of seeing this on Broadway and it is magnificent. Amazing how fresh and alive it comes across, 60 some odd years after the original. Just shows what a masterpeice of theater should be. The cast is sublime, Paulo Szot totally deserving the Tony he won, a remarkable performance. Finally a performance that puts Emile DeBeque on the same level as Nellie Forbush. Wonderful. The entire Lincoln Center Production is fantastic. Rumor has it that it will be filmed for PBS as part of the Live From Lincoln Center Series in August. Don't miss it!!

Free Music Review: Better than the original?
Hit: 5 Stars

I heard the original sound track thousands of times as a young naval officer in the South Pacific and fell in love with it. So, when the revival came to Broadway I bought tickets well before the opening, hoping for a good review. The reviews were great and so was my enjoyment of the show (go if you can!). Lowpoints were probably Bloody Mary (not enough oomph to her singining) and LT Cable whose singing seemed a bit weak, although that matches his character. Otherwise, the cast was great. Another reviewer mentioned that the CD seemed less inspired than the stage presentation, but that may be true in general--it's true that there isn't anything the same as being there. Better than the original? I don't want to get in to that discussion--I never saw the original, but the CD of the revival is certainly as good as the recording of the original.

Free Music Review: Totally Worth The Wait
Hit: 5 Stars

It took decades to revive this Pulitzer-winning classic, but it was totally worth the wait.

Rogers & Hammerstein's engaging score sounds terrific, with orchestrations that are full and lush. The cast, led by Kelli O'Hara, Paul Szot, Matthew Morrison, Danny Burstein, and Loretta Ables Sayre, are marvelous and this production seems destined to win many Tony Awards this season.

Best Tracks:

Overture [orchestra sounds great]
Some Enchanted Evening
There Is Nothin' Like A Dame
Bali Ha'i [my personal favorite]
I'm Gonna Wash That Man Right Outa My Head
A Wonderful Guy
Younger Than Springtime
This Nearly Was Mine

In a season of spectacular revivals ("Gypsy"; "Sunday In The Park With George"), this production reigns supreme!
