Free Music Notes for Big River: The Adventures Of Huckleberry Finn (1985 Original Broadway Cast)

Free Music Review: Correction
Hit: 4 Stars

I think this is a great musical. I saw on Broadway with my Grandma years ago and I have never thought that it got the credit it deserves. Hardly anyone has even heard of it, and I think it's much better than many of the more popular musicals (such as Cats--yuck!). I want to note, however, that one of the other reviewers made a mistake in his review. The slave's name is Jim, not Ben, and he is Huck's friend, not his slave. On this note, I would reccomend that everyone read the book, too, since it's one of all-time greats of American literature.

Free Music Review: Mark Twain's Heart and Soul
Hit: 5 Stars

After seeing "Big River" at our local theater, it was clear that Roger Miller had absorbed what Mark Twain wrote, then released Twain's captured spirit in this glorious production. The heart-rending "River in the Rain" expresses in music what Twain penned in words. I've read nearly everything Twain wrote, I've visited the caves where Tom and Becky were lost, and I'm half Southern myself, so I was thrilled by almost every number on this album. I'm past crying when I listen to "Worlds Apart". You'll swear "Crossing to the Other Side" was a genuine spiritual. (How could a white guy write this?) My entire family howls with laughter at "Guv'ment", and we are not prone to howling. Roger Miller was more than "King of the Road". His talent was as deep and as broad as the Mississippi.

Free Music Review: It deserves 10 stars!
Hit: 5 Stars

Like at least one other reviewer, I have neither acted in nor seen this wonderful musical. I absolutely LOVE every song on this disc! I have to say that when it comes to the uptempo songs "When the Sun goes Down in the South" has one of my favorite lyrics: "Step right up and see the duo bodily do the doo wah diddy on the clothesline" talk about a bouncy lyric! And I don't know about you all, but I get such a lump in my throat when the orchestra builds after the bridge of "Maybe Leavin's not the Only Way to Go". So here's my question to all you booking agents and touring companies out there: Can we PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE see a Nationsl Tour??? I missed out on this one the first time through!

Free Music Review: Astounding Music and Lyrics
Hit: 5 Stars

Roger Miller has done it! The music and lyrics for "Big River" are sheer Americana! I bought this CD on a whim, having only seen bits and pieces of the play, and boy am I glad I did! The music will have you dancing and singing along! Its riotous, rowdy mood makes it hard to sit still to listen through! The lyrics can be emotional at one point, and goofy at another! The lyrics in "Hand for the Hog" reminded me of an old-time auction, while the lyrics for "Worlds Apart" are passionately engrossing, and still give me chills!A definite catch!
