Free Music Notes for I Have Always Been Here Before: The Roky Erickson AnthologyFree Music Review: Roky Erickson-'I Have Always Been There Before:The Roky Erickson Anthology' (Shout Factory) Hit: 5 Stars
Nicely assembled 2-CD,43 track audio diary (sort to speak)of the former 13th Floor Elevator's vocalist repertoire. If you're a fan of '60's psych like myself, then this is an absolute must-have. Starts off with Erickson's 1965 pre-13th Floor single, performed by his early band The Spades, "We Sell Soul". Plus, we get some 13th Floor gems like "You're Gonna Miss Me", "Fire Engine", "Splash" and several others. Then there's plenty of material that I'm hearing for the very first time, cuts from Roky Erickson & The Aliens that are semi-impressive like "Mine Mine Mind", the rocking "Red Temple Prayer", "I Think Up Demons" and "Creature Of Atom Brain". Remember, there was a career 'still-happening' for Roky Erickson after 13th Floor Elevators disbanded. Essential.
Free Music Review: Absolutely Brilliant Hit: 5 Stars
The more I listen to Roky, I feel he is an absolute genius. An amazing player and artist - he can get a song across like few can. I'd put him up with John Lennon in this category. What a great singer. Of course, like many reviewers here I wonder what have happened if the rest of the world had caught up him in the 60's, before he was busted and sent to psychiatric jail and where he subsequently developed schizophrenia. I've read about people trying to find an equal to the Rolling Stones in America (or elsewhere) and well the 13th Floor Elevators are certainly the equal. Roky can belt out a song like no one else and the bands he plays with usually rock very hard.
Free Music Review: The sound is amazing and Roky Erickson is GOD by the way... Hit: 5 Stars
This is a very beautiful anthology that is Assembled perfectly. It is One of the best retrospectives on any artists career and The songs are remastered superbly. I want to thank the people at Shout factory, Roky is finally getting the respect he deserves.
The music has never sounded so good! I wish the company that put out this anthology would remaster all the 13th Floor Elevator albums and Roky's solo albums.
Free Music Review: The Man, The Myth, The Legend Hit: 5 Stars
If you do not know who Roky Erickson is, then you absolutely need to know. One of the creators of psychedelic music in the 60's. Cults of Acid Washed people. Stealing Mail and severe Paranoia. That's just some of the insight into Roky. Friends with another legend Townes Van Zandt. This is Creepy, Psychedelic, Trippy, and well played Rock N' Roll.
Free Music Review: We should have elected Erickson president in 1968. Hit: 5 Stars
If you have any interest at all in Roky Erickson, I highly recommend this set. Some of these songs are so beautiful they'll stop you in your tracks. Get this thing and stick it in your CD machine; you won't be sorry.
