Free Music Review: "They've been outcasts all their lives"
Hit: 5 Stars

The Rolling Stones have one of the most enviable back catalogues in the history of rock 'n' roll, a fierce musical resume that includes such grand slams as Exile On Main Street, Some Girls, Aftermath, Out Of Our Heads, and Let It Bleed. With a lineup like that, topping oneself is extremely difficult- most bands probably couldn't even make an album as good as Their Satanic Majesties Request, and that's the one that 'Stones fans don't even like! Which is what makes Beggars Banquet such a mind-boggling achievement; even in a discography stuffed with high points, it stands out. Why? Simple: There isn't a single bad song on this thing. No mediocre ones, either. As a matter of fact, what we have here is a collection of ten rock 'n' roll mini-masterpieces, raw symphonic explosions of sleaze and sex and blues and country and Brian Jones and a bunch of other really good stuff.

I mean, this album has "Sympathy For The Devil" on it! Do you have any idea how good that song is? It's incredible! Everything about it, from its surging melodies to its hypnotic rhythms to its apocalyptic lyrical poetry, is just plain stunning, and the performance itself is full of nerve-strangling tension and mounting fury. The other big song here is the rousing working class stomp of "Street Fighting Man," which is also just plain great. The other songs deserved to be huge, too. "No Expectations" is an absolutely gorgeous piece of lovelorn blues, and "Jigsaw Puzzle" is a surreal gospel-tinged end-of-the-sixties anthem. "Dear Doctor" is a hilarious (and relentlessly catchy) rural country romp, "Stray Cat Blues" is distilled sleaze, and "Salt Of The Earth" is a genuinely rousing ode to the downtrodden. "Parachute Women" is pure ramblin' blues, and the cover of Robert WIlkins' "Prodigal Son" is an atmospheric slice of raw rural gospel.

So, what you're looking at is simply one of the greatest albums ever made by anyone, anywhere, for any reason. It's the kind of thing you might want to buy. Like, right now.

Beggars Banquet Poster

Opening with "Sympathy for the Devil," the Stones' infamous we-are-evil poem, this all-original 1968 album began a quality streak almost unmatched in rock & roll. Mick Jagger begins writing from the working-class hero's perspective--especially on the anthem "Street Fighting Man" and "Salt of the Earth"--and Keith Richards buttresses his partner with rock-solid slide licks recently graduated from the School of Old Blues Records. "Jig-Saw Puzzle," which inexplicably never became a hit, is the only known instance of Jagger's describing the Stones' individual personalities in verse. --Steve Knopper
Beggars Banquet is among the Stones two or three greatest albums, so it's also among the very best rock & roll albums ever made. Though known for its twin anthems of social decay, "Sympathy For The Devil" and "Street Fighting Man," it's actually the album's gritty yet beautiful acoustic country and country-blues numbers--"Dear Doctor," "Prodigal Son," "No Expectations," "Factory Girl"--that has helped Beggars stand up so effectively through the years--that and the fact that Keith Richard's lyrics here often come as close to sincerity as he's capable. When he sings "Let's drink to the hard working people," for once you almost believe him. --David Cantwell
