Free Music Notes for Big Hits (High Tide and Green Grass)Free Music Review: First Stones Complication -- It's Great Hit: 5 Stars"Big Hits" opens with "Satisfaction" a rocker if ever their was one, then it segues right into "The Last Time" another rocker, but then it changes pace with the beautiful "As Tears Go Bye." I've played "Tears" a jillion times, both the Stones version and the version done my Marianne Faithful and I'm at a loss, I can't decide which one I like best. It's a toss up, they're both wonderful. All, but three of the songs one this dynamite compilation were penned by Mick and Keith, though apparently they got a little help from pal Andrew on "Tears." This is a record you should have in your collection. I think you should go out and get it right now, so you shouldn't fade away, shouldn't have a nervous breakdown, you should get off your cloud and get this disc, you won't be sorry. Really you won't.
Free Music Review: UK Version Available? Hit: 5 Stars The UK version released in November 1966 may be a slightly better set: "Have You Seen Your Mother, Baby, Standing in the Shadow?", "Paint It, Black", "It's All Over Now", "The Last Time", "Heart of Stone", "Not Fade Away", "Come On", "(I Can't Get No) Satisfaction", "Get Off My Cloud", "As Tears Go By", "19th Nervous Breakdown", "Lady Jane", "Time Is On My Side", "Little Red Rooster".
Free Music Review: The essence of early Stones excitement! Hit: 5 StarsYou can't go wrong with this one. It features the early Stones singles that "jumped out of the radio". Satisfaction, Get Off My Cloud, The Last Time, It's All Over Now, Tell Me, etc. etc. I agree there may be more compilations that cover a more comprehensive look at the stones career, but I recommend getting the Vol. 2 as well (Through the Past Darkly, Big Hits Vol 2) since it picks up with singles Paint It Black in '66 and goes through their Honky Tonk Women era of '69. The remastered sound is clean and spacious with more definition on lows as well as highs. Vol. 1 is the same as the early release in 1966, that was worn out by every college student throughout America. It also includes a picture book with color photos of the early Stones. A fabulous greatest hits package by one of the greatest rock bands in history.
Free Music Review: why is this missing from the list of the picks of the experts Hit: 5 StarsNot that I am an expert but this is the ablum I cut my Rolling Stones tooth on. I had it as a vinyl and reel to reel. It is early Stones, but it still brings out what I liked about them to begin with. And I made an 8 track for my car from the reel to reel tape. Good old stones knocking them down with there orignal licks. That I really remember. I would say that if you are into collecting the Stones start here. If it not your cup of tea you are not old enough. This is there first greatest hits and it still rocks today. For me!!
Free Music Review: Here it Comes! Hit: 4 StarsHigh Tide and Green Grass is a wonderful 37 minute trip down memory lane and, for the most part, these memories never sounded sooooo good. Like all the other SACD releases, you are going to hear things that were formerly lost in the mix, especially in the original CD releases. The aforementioned Satisfaction and 19th Nervous Breakdown sound particulary awesome from this effort. It's All Over Now is playing as I type this and again, I'm hearing guitar parts that were previously muddy. I hadn't realized just how much the Rolling Stones used acoustic 12 string guitar back in the day.
So far, I've given all of the SACD releases 5 stars (Beggar's Banquet, Through The Past Darkly, and Let it Bleed). Maybe I've been spoiled and I'm being unfair with 4 stars. I guess there is only so much even the very best engineer can do with old mono recordings. Some of the older material is definitely going to sound dated, for example "Tell Me" just can't stand up to most of the other material here. Don't get me wrong, this CD is well worth the purchase price but I think I would save it for last. On the other hand, it does have the nice restored photo booklet that will bring back the memories or for the youngsters, give you a glimpse of who was playing the music all us middle aged old-coots were so excited about.
I'm glad I purchased this, but I do sort of wish I'd purchased the UK Aftermath and UK Between the Buttons releases before picking this up. I do plan on collecting all of the original ABKCO Stones releases so what the heck. Many of these hits did not, as used to be tradition in the UK, appear on the UK releases anyway.
There is something I would like to point out to those who have been griping about no bonus tracks on these ABKCO SACD re-releases. They are intended to be as the Rolling Stones released them. Think of it like this, say an artist was having an exhibition of female nude studies at a gallery and the gallery owners decided to remove a couple of the nude studies and replace them with penguin studies the same artist had done at another time. Now that would be stupid wouldn't it? It really is the same thing! And now I can hear you saying "but the penguins are technically nude...." Hey You! Get off of my cloud!
A word of warning on the used disks. Make sure they are the 2002 remaster before wasting your money. I once purchased a used King Crimson CD advertised along with the remasters. It was a 20 year old remaster that really sucked.
