Free Music Review: This is where it all began!
Hit: 5 Stars

This is, quite simply, the seminal Stones album; the roots of everything that was to come over the next 35+ years! When this album came out, it changed the way we thought about music. The reviewers who suggest that more songs be packed on the CD must be very young. You don't alter perfection...

Free Music Review: Early, rough, and unpolished
Hit: 4 Stars

For whatever reason, ABKCO chose to reissue the American version of their first album yet again, despite the fact that it differs by exactly one cut ("Not Fade Away" instead of "Mona"). Ahh, who knows.

In any case, while those expecting sonic delights should stay away--produced Oldham, intimidated by the use of multi-track on Come On, decided to record this album directly to mono--this is a prime slice of distorted, raw R&B; it's a far rougher start than the Beatles' Please Please Me, but enjoyable all the same. It's mythical reputation is perhaps slightly undeserved, but it still rocks.

I've always been puzzled, by the way, as to why the two original tracks here don't get praised more highly. Well, maybe that's only half true; "Tell Me" seems to have its followers, but nobody ever seems to mention "Little By Little," an soundalike track that tends to impress me more than most of the covers on the album.

Finally, a little point of miscellany. ABKCO finally decided to bestow upon US listeners the 4:05 version of "Tell Me," which had only previously been available on disc on long out-of-print German and Japanese CDs. Unfortunately, instead of the cold ending featured on those discs, we are granted the full 4:05 version, but with a gradual fadeout. Unfortunate.

Verdict: It's a bit of a ripoff at retail in this day and age, with its short running length and rough sound quality, but give it a shot; you'll never believe this is the same band that did "It's Only Rock 'n Roll!"

Free Music Review: The Stones way back when
Hit: 5 Stars

The Rolling Stones way back when started off as a R&B, Blues band that interpreted the songs of their idols. On this album, we get to see the influences first hand, and I can only wish that they still made songs like this. There are some good songs here that only casual Stones fans wont know, but they are missing some great music. I think that the listener should give these following songs a real listen to: NOT FADE AWAY, ROUTE 66, I JUST WANT TO MAKE LOVE TO YOU, HONEST I DO, CAN I GET A WITNESS, LITTLE BY LITTLE, I'M A KING BEE. These songs are great and fun to listen to. With the bonus of being remastered, I think compared to the earlier CD, you can hear a difference. I highly recommend this CD for every STONES fan, and this isnt a bad place for some casual fans to start.

Free Music Review: love the stones, hate rip off's
Hit: 3 Stars

Thank mike-on-the-mike for your review. I was thinking I was the only frustrated stones fan that wanted all the early songs without buying so many cd's that constantly overlap the same songs. And with today's cd technology, something special should be done for such a special band like the stones. Give us more for the buck then just 30 minutes on a cd AND then repeat some of the same songs on the next cd (i.e. Between The Buttons & Flowers). What a rip off. I will pay good money for something like a Rolling Stones Box Set (6 or 7 cd's), of simply the first songs released before mid 1967. The LP'S DON'T MEAN A THING. WHAT MATTERS ARE THE SONGS. I WANT THE SONGS ON CD, WITHOUT BUYING SO MANY LP'S ON CD.

Free Music Review: Shame on you record company!
Hit: 3 Stars

A question for whomever is pocketing my fifteen bucks: Why would I want to hear an LP recorded "live" on to one track in Super Audio? Hey, don't get me wrong, the (cd portion) sound quality is much improved over the original versions. But this is 2002, don't we deserve to have a quality mixed sound in this day and age? What is a shame is that I am paying top dollar for a 38 year old LP that is a little over 30 minutes long. (Heck, at least the jazz labels give us alternative versions as filler!). The Stones, like all sixties British groups, concentrated on singles and eps for the British market. They almost never included singles (much like the Beatles). The American versions of all of the pre-Satantic Majesty albums are different from their English counterparts (sometimes better, sometimes not). If you wanted to collect all of the officially released Stones songs from 1963 to 1966 material you would have to buy 8 c.d.'s, plus the three disc singles boxset, plus the two disc "more hot rocks". Thanks a whole lot for still requiring us to buy all of these, in their same outdated formats, at a jumped up price. Thanks alot!

Now that I got that off my chest... my review of the album itself: Beginning with their first (UK) hit Fade Away, the band reveals themselves to be a bunch of middle class punks who had never been out of their hometowns before, but loved the American rock & roll, blues, and r&b that they had been listening to on 45's for years. Much of the album has a primative garage feel to it. No Stones collection is complete without Carol, Route 66, I Just Wanna Make Love to You, and Can I Get a Witness. Great fun interpreations. Then there are a first two Jagger/Richards originals (with words): "Little by Little" & "Tell Me". The first is derivative of the above mentioned covers but isn't a bad song. "Tell Me" has more of a Girl-Group / Brill Street sound to it, and wouldn't sound out of place being sung by any of the popular Mercy Beat groups of the day. The rest of the tracks are basically filler. So, you're going to want to hear five or so of the songs that are on here, but unavailable elsewhere. Is that worth fifteen buck to you? No.
