The Rolling Stones-Their Stanic Majesties Request ***
It has long been compared to and said to be the Rolling Stones answer to The Beatles Srg. Pepper. I don't see it at all. For one this is much, much darker than that of Pepper and the only real comparison is that of the psychedelic factor. Really I feel that this was just Brian Jones way of fighting back for the power over the band which he once controlled and Their Satanic... is his last attempt. How else to you explain the abundance of odd instrumentation?
For me personally that is the only thing of merit on this album. Brian Jones plays nearly everything under the sun (well he would have had he been able to. A true musical genius he was. Weird time signatures and production help to add to the mystique of the album, but other than that there really isn't much to praise.
'2000 Light Years From Home' is the albums focal point. Easily the strongest track on the album. An epic if you will with fantasy lyrics and some out of this world (no pun intended) instrumentation. 'She's A Rainbow' is also decent and managed to become a hit for The Stones. I however have never been a big fan of the song other than the nice piano in the mix. The rest of the album is forgettable or flat out awful. 'Sing This All Together' both parts, are just horrible and almost impossible to listen to all the way.
Their Satanic Majesties Request is not among the Rolling Stones greatest albums and it is not one that should be recommended. If your a completest go for it but proceed with caution.

Clearly their answer to Sgt. Pepper, or at least "All You Need is Love," Satanic Majesties is actually as sloppy an artifact as Flowers. But even at their most (willfully?) goofy '60s moment, the Stones came up with some good songs. "She's a Rainbow" is fine second-tier pop-psychedelia, while "2000 Light Years from Home" can still transmit a pretty handsome case of the Fear. Bill Wyman's "In Another Land" is as thin as his phased vocal, but still plays better than "Sing This All Together (See What Happens)." Not the most essential Stones disc by a long shot, but one that fans will want to own sooner or later. --Rickey Wright
