Free Music Review: Stones Place In History
Hit: 5 Stars

It's difficult indeed to try to encapsulate The Rolling Stones. They produced so much recorded material (some of which is (yes) still unavailable) that it boggles the mind.

It's a funny thing: I do recording work with a coworker, and we had a conversation a week or so ago about sound quality, since we both have become ridiculous audiophiles. We were talking about British artists, since I had been doing work on The Fortunes, and I immediately piped up and starting glorifying The Stones. My coworker said "Not so fast." Since he used to work with a local band in The Philly area, I listened with interest to what he said. He explained to me that once one put the Stones material on the sine wave and analyzed it, their recording sound was really quite sloppy and not-so-good sonically when compared to, for instance, The Beatles. Now of course The Beatles had superior sound quality largely because they practiced, practiced for days on end and also, of course, they performed at Homburg.

OK, true, I have no argument with what he said; however there are so many extenuating circumstances with regard to a likely somewhat sloppy sound, that it literally washes that idea out like a gully washer downpour washing rain down a storm drain.

The idea is that for those of us that grew up during the 60s & who also listened to the radio (& WHO didn't) The Stones were just as much on anybody's list as The Beatles were. AND there are some facts which stand The Stones out.
1). They are still together (with the exception of Brian Jones who drowned in 1969) as an original group in 2010, having formed in January of 1963. This fact alone should knock out any degradation of them. If my math serves me that's about to be 48 years! I haven't checked every possible source, but that's likely a world record for any band & a fact that should be noted very clearly.
2). While The Beatles were primarily "simply" a rock band, The Stones were a rhythm & blues based rock band. This immediately places them in still a separate category, and a category which I feel warrants close study when trying to put The Stones in their place in pop music history. Rhythm & blues of course came out of the 50s doo-wop. That doo-wop evolved into what became known as "soul music" which was such an incredible genre during the 60s into early 70s until disco came along & besmirched pop music forever.
3) All this taken into account if one were to randomly question 1000 people who closely listened to pop radio during the 60s-early 70s, The Stones are more often than not considered the world's all-time greatest rock band.

I have read a lot of the comments on this blog, and it seems as though there is a lot of thought and in some cases criticism being given to sound quality and availability of Stones material, especially comparing original British releases with the available American releases of the same material. I certainly agree that as far as availability goes The Brits gave us more, and if one can find the original DECCA volumes on CD, the sound quality is better too.
I just wonder when this country is going to "See The Light!"

One more word: In the ever present debate of stereo vs. mono, a lot of the Stones 60s stuff sounds better in mono. That's coming from someone who prefers stereo! The original punch and drive of the band is lost in stereo on such tracks as "Satisfaction", "Get Off My Cloud", "Mother's Little Helper", and "Time Is On My Side." There are stereo pieces out there (and I own them) which present all of those tracks in stereo. It's a German disc which went out of print about 20 years ago! Although it doesn't sound bad, it's not the original stuff we were listening to on our car radios & on any radios, for that matter. The mono versions are definitely superior sonically.

As a final analysis: To me The Stones are the consummate rock-rhythm & blues band of all time, hands down.
