Free Music Review: A taste of the soup
Hit: 5 Stars

The year was 1973. The band had just gone on a highly successful U.S. tour in support of their album from the previous year; "Exile on Main Street" (ever heard of it?). Not only has 'Exile' been named as the band's best album on numerous occasions, it is also in line with a string of albums that have also been considered the bands best (Beggars Banquet, Let It Bleed & Sticky Fingers). So when the band began recording this, they were coming off of alot. Upon the record's release, it was considered a dissapointment (but hey, so was 'Exile' at the time!). In fact, many people STILL consider it a dissapointment. Me? I consider it timeless.

1. Dancing With Mr. D - Starts with a lazy sounding riff that can be described as a slower variation of the riff to their 1971 song 'Bitch'. Infact, the whole song has a 'lazy' sort of vibe to it, so it really sets the mood of the album. Spooky overtones and somewhat dark in content (even if it does come off as sounding a bit contrived). It chugs along nicely as a slow paced rocker. Some may describe it as corny, but I wouldn't call it bad AND it has a nice chorus to boot. It does seem to go on a bit too long though and the song really isn't THAT strong. 6.5/10

2. 100 Years Ago - Now we're talking. Not a rocker, more like "power pop", but it still....rocks! The verse melody is one of the catchiest Mick has ever come up with and Mick Taylor plays a nice wah wah guitar throughout. There is a loose jam at the end where Charlie is pounding the drums as hard as ever and Mick Taylor is tearing it up on his guitar. Perfect. 10/10

3. Coming Down Again - One of the first Keith sung ballads. This is actually a strong effort though. It does go on a bit too long, but it's very laid back sounding. Deals with his drug addiction, I would say. Has a nice dreamy electric guitar sound. 6.5/10

4. Doo Doo Doo Doo Doo (Heartbreaker) - You still hear this one on the radio from time to time. More nice wah wah guitar from Mick Taylor. This song can be described as a funk rocker. Considered a classic, deservingly so. Not my favorite, but good nonetheless. 8/10

5. Angie - Some call it a classic. Some bash it as too sappy, poppy, or "70's-ish" to be a Stones song. I fall into the first category. Acoustic driven pop ballad with an instantly recognizable melody. One of Mick's greatest ballad vocal performances. 10/10

6. Silver Train - Nothing spectacular here, just the band having fun with a fast paced blues song. I guess I could compare it to 1972's 'All Down The Line' except it's not as good. Mick Taylor does play a mean slide on here though. Just a fun track. 7/10

7. Hide Your Lover - Again, just sounds like the band having fun doing a bluesy tune. This one is piano based, but is still uptempo and again has some mean guitar brought to you by Mr. Taylor. 7/10

8. Winter - Acknowledged as one of the bands classic ballads. However, I don't know that I agree with that. It's good, but not excellent. Just a midtempo pop ballad. I do, however, think that Mick Taylor's guitar solo brings this song to soaring heights. Had it not been included, I probably would have considered this tune to be filler. 7/10

9. Can You Hear The Music - Probably the most experimental song on the whole album. Also one of the weakest. Kind of has this psychadelic pop feel to it. Midtempo but with a dominant guitar riff. However, not dominant like 'Brown Sugar' or 'Start Me Up', but dominant with the effect it has and it's volume. Especially when it first comes in. Another song with a lazy vibe to it. 6.5/10

10. Star Star - Orignally titled 'Starf*cker', but had to be renamed upon release. This is a classic. Uptempo hard rocker with classic Mick vocals and a great sing along chorus (it's true). Ranks with the band's best. A must hear. If you only needed one reason to buy this album, this would be it. 10/10

This isn't the band's best album, but it's one of them. As I've stated a few times throughout the review, the album does have a lazy vibe to it. It also has, at time, a drug hazed vibe to it. This was due to Keith Richard's strong heroin addiction. His presence isn't always felt on the album and you can tell. It DOES make a difference. But this is still a classic and one of my favorites.
