Free Music Notes for Hot Rocks 1964-1971

Free Music Review: Great collection
Hit: 5 Stars

Better than "Forty Licks" for the pacing and quality of the album, Hot Rocks is the best collection of the Stones at their peak. Every song is a gem, the tracklist covers all the important songs, and you get what you need. There's enough here to pique a new fan's interest and also serve as a handy set for the older Stones fan that wants the essentials for their car stereo, or whatever. The remastered sound is excellent, for those who care. My only complaint is that a few more songs--the best from "More Hot Rocks", perhaps?--could fit on this set. When I made a tape of my old 80's copy for the car (back before they had CD players in cars), I stuck "She's a Rainbow" on before "Jumping Jack Flash", and it worked quite well.

For more information on the Stones' best albums, check out "Beggars Banquet" and "Let It Bleed", which is where you should start your REAL Stones collection (please see my review of that album, entitled "Stones Classic).

Free Music Review: simply amazing
Hit: 5 Stars

i remember getting my first cd player for christmas when i was 14 with it i got a cd carrying various classic cd's, this cd was one of them. to tell the truth i have been listing to the stones since i was 5, and i knew then i like the way they sounded. being a kid i hadn't a clue about the various styles they played, but as i grew older and started appreciating music as a whole i relized that these guys will always be remebered as the bes of the best. Ever since i got this cd, i have listened to it over and over, i am 24 now and for the first time i am going to see them live. this set cements the fact that what ever these guys touch, turns to gold. stripped is a shining example of what a comp cd should be, most comp cd's just touch on a bands greatnes, only having one or two hits and the rest the dregs of thier worst cd's. don't get me wrong it's good to hear the less played songs, some the stones best stuff is hardly ever played o nthe radio, over all this is a must have in any cd collection

Free Music Review: Been a LONG time comin' -- WELL worth it -- Incredible sound
Hit: 5 Stars

Tired of buying CD's that claim to be "remastered" only to bring them home and not be able to tell them apart from the original? You won't be disappointed here.

The Stones CD's of their 60's material were some of the most poorly mastered in history. The original Hot Rocks disc from 1986 is full of tape glitches, pops, hiss, and songs mastered at the wrong speed. Finally, justice has been served. This newly upgraded version blows away the original, fixing all the above-mentioned problems and then some. Even the most untrained ear will easily notice the vast improved sound quality.

And to those complaining about certain songs like "Satisfaction" and "Get Off My Cloud" not being in stereo...have you actually HEARD those versions? They stink! "Satisfaction" is sped WAY up and the wide stereo effect on both songs (drums in one speaker, etc) gives them less "punch."

Hooray to ABKCO records. They got it right this time.

Free Music Review: Still the best early Stones compilation
Hit: 5 Stars

Spanning the first seven years of the Stones' recording career, "Hot Rocks" includes almost every song the casual fan could want from that period.
It doesn't include their earliest blues and R&B covers, which is a shame, but once you're hooked I'm sure you can find the money to go out and get the Stones' first four LPs anyway ;-)

But look at what is here: "Satisfaction", "Heart Of Stone", "Honky Tonk Women", "Jumpin' Jack Flash", "Brown Sugar", "Sympathy For The Devil" and many, many more. This is truly the cream of the crop.
This excellent, well annotated and expertly sequenced compilation presents the Rolling Stones' early singles in warm, three-dimensional and tremendously realistic 21st century fidelity. Get "Hot Rocks" and "Jump Back: The Best Of The Rolling Stones 1971-1993" and you'll have a much better career overview than with the good-but-not-great 2002 box set "Forty Licks".

Free Music Review: Just the hits, mostly, but better than ever!
Hit: 5 Stars

I have never been so fanatical about sound before now. It has always been performance first, the former taking a back seat. Without question, these classic albums have stood the test of time as well as any recordings ever released! All the studio discs released in 1986 sans the hits packages were brought under my roof, including the rare U.K. version of Aftermath. That being the case, I decided to test the waters of the new remasters with "Hot Rocks". I was not just blown away by the improved sound, but also the life-like quality of each and every track that I listened to. The new life that breathed into even the mono tracks was so impressive, I decided to eventually replace the entire Decca collection. Most appreciative, "She's A Rainbow" on "More Hot Rocks" loses the camp introduction that lost its welcome since the "Majesties" disc.
