Free Music Notes for Hot Rocks 1964-1971Free Music Review: Classic Stones Overview Hit: 5 Stars
Like that other 60s Titan, The Beatles, the Stones are hard to nail down with a greatest hits set. But Hot Rocks hits all the highlights, at least for their 1960s work. It is an excellent introduction to the group, I first bought it on vinyl in 1984 at the age of 18 and was hooked on the group from that point forward, as well as a historical overview of just how much they grew musically over a relatively short period of time. The sound is a vast improvement over what came before on CD. In particular Mother's Little Helper and 19th Nervous Breakdown which sounded on previous releases like they were copies of copies. You can hear the sound of the tape stretching on one point during 19th Breakdown. That is all fixed here. This is essential.
Free Music Review: Punk's Beginnings Hit: 5 Stars
... In my opinion the Stones sound from the 60's is the best. They sounded like garage rock from England. With the Beatles to compete with back then they had to put a lot into their music. Considering songs like "Under My Thumb", "Jumpin' Jack Flash", "Honky Tonk Women" , "(I Can't Get No)Satisfaction" and "Sympathy for the Devil", I think they succeded in arguably being John, Paul, George and Ringo's equals. No one can play the guitar quite like Keith Richards and it's too bad they lost Brian Jones because I think he did a lot for the band's sound. "Brown Sugar" and "Wild Horses" are even on this album, which I believe came out the same year on "Sticky Fingers". If you want a Best of the Stones, this is it.
Free Music Review: if you want one collection of the Stones, get this one Hit: 5 Stars
this covers all their greatest stuff, and is really all you need if you aren't a hardcore fan. I wouldn't call myself a real Rolling Stones fan, but I do enjoy the classic songs on here like "paint it black" and "satisfaction," among others. ideal if you are new to the band, though you have likely heard of them before (they must be the most famous band in the history of rock, no?) yes, definetily get it. I know that the Stones always have released mediocre live material, but the live tracks on here are extremely good, all 2 of them. There's not that much I can say about the Stones; I like most of the music, but in general I don't dig the band that much. If you are like me, this one is for you.
Free Music Review: Great SACD transfer of some of the best Stones tunes ever Hit: 5 Stars
A number of other reviewers have done a great job addressing the songs collected in this recording, I just wanted to briefly describe the quality of the SACD layer of this hybrid 2-disc set... it's excellent. I did some back to back listening of the CD (Redbook) layer and SACD layers for comparison. On "Sympathy for the Devil" you can hear Mick's more subtle grunts & screams with startling clarity behind the percussion intro. Detail and dynamic range is similarly impressive throughout both discs. The remastering definitely produced a very good CD layer (particularly the stereo imaging), but the SACD truly shines. A must have for any Stones fan with SACD equipment!
Free Music Review: Is DSD all that ? Hit: 5 Stars
Short answer: Yes! Longer answer: I was 13 on the day this was released as a 2 record set,I got it and "Mark, Don, & Mel" together, and the only thing on my turntable for the next 2 months were they. Decades later, the cassette for my car. Then my son bought his own CD copy in the 90s. After researching DSD, I decided to let my ears decide for themselves.
On a Harmon Kardon receiver,Sony SACD player, with Yamaha home theater speakers I sat back...Wow ! Crystal clear, like I was in the studio. I'm 50 now so I can't take this technology for granted,I'm in awe of it, and more importantly,am grateful for it. Waiting 16 years for the RIGHT way to remaster was the right move ABKCO !
