Free Music Review: Dictionary definition of Rock Music
Hit: 5 Stars

Sticky Fingers is the definition of Rock Music, an unparalled masterpiece. I have some problems with a couple reviews.

Colleen M Finley of Pittsburgh writes, "To me, the only real talent they have is Kieth Richards and even he is VERY limited in what he does on guitar." That's insane, Keith Richards is bar none the most innovative Rhythm guitarist that ever lived. Most guitarist use a standard strumming pattern or a derivation of a classic pattern i.e. John Lee Hooker's stomp, or Bo Diddley's riffs, or Chuck Berry's 12-bar blues comping, or just a standard even tempo strum used in all folk or rock music. Some guitarist strech out and incorporate Jazz rhythms and chords like Robbie Kreiger or even Carlos Santana's latin influences. Keith Richards plays a completely original style that has elements of all the above but is never predictable of repetative. I dare a first time listener of a Stones song to predict where the rhythm and cadence of the guitar is going next or to try to play a faithfull imitation of it. It's not possible. Anyone can sit down and learn the chords and rhythm of any Eric Clapton, Eagles, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Led Zepplin, Rush, Pink Floyd, or Bob Dylan song in minutes but trying to grasp the intricicies of Keith's playin is very difficult. George Harrison is the only other that comes to mind in the same class as Richard's as far as innovation and unpredictability goes. That's why Stones songs stand the test of time, because you can listen to them hundreds of times and still hear something new and interesting if you get past the lyrics and melodies and listen to the rhythm. Colleen's statement is either un-informed, naive, or just wrong. She is obviously not a musician.

Edward F. Lapinskas of Dade City, Florida writes "This was the start of the musical "end" of the Rolling Stones.
About the only 2 songs worth SPIT: Wild Horses & the C/W parody
Dead Flowers......It's a 2 song album folks, trust me." Insane. Their next album was Exile on Main St, routinely voted their best and also one of the best in the history of rock music. After 71' they also released some great singles like, Angie, Beast of Burden, Start me Up, and Its only rocknroll but I like it just to name a few. The idea that Brian Jones was somehow the driving creative force behind the stones is ludicrious. Even while in the band he was too wasted to contribute by most accounts. He wrote very few songs and was an inferior guitarist to both Mick Taylor and Ronnie Wood. Also when the Stones decided they didn't have to compete with the Beatles for who had the most Number One singles their albums flourished. Thier hits before 69' are mostly predictable, forgettable pop/R&B/rock songs. Let it Bleed is great but Brian Jones had little or no impact on it. Keith played most of the guitar with Mick Taylor adding some lead and slide parts esp. on Midnight Rambler. Brian Jones is credited with Autoharp and Percussion. For god's sake Ian Stewart and Bobby Keys are much more important to this album and every other Stones album than Brian Jones. Even on Beggars Banquet, Jones was backing away, and you can hear the difference. That album includes Sympathy for the Devil, Street Fighting Man, Parachut Woman, and Factory Girl. Those are Keith Richards' songs not Brian Jones'. You'd have to go back to "Their Satanic Majesties Request" in 1967 on songs like "2000 light years from home" to see any real Brian Jones impact on the band. As for Sticky Fingers being a "two song album". Wild Horses and Dead Flowers are great but to leave out Can't you hear me knockin is a travesty. That is probably the single greatest acheivment of the Stones and possibly rock music in the 70's. It's been in countless movie soundtracks including Casino and Blow. Their is a power captured on that tape that is chilling to listen to. The crazy rhythm's of Keith and Mick Taylor are amazing. It's a rocker but also an atmospheric mood piece. A true masterpiece. "Fast Eddie" also left out the haunting Moonlight Mile, and two of the great up-tempo stones songs Bitch and Brown Sugar. Don't count out Sway and I got the Blues either. If Sister Morphine had been written by another band like Velvet Underground it would have been their biggest hit.

Keith the Wonderwall writes in a shocking display of hate..."Overrated album. Please The Stones can't play music at all. Look at the art cover of this CD. What are they? GAYS?? I think so. At least put the picture of a girl wearing jeans." This from the same reviewer who gave "Who's Next" 5 stars. No disrespect intended to The Who but a lot of their songs reference sexual abuse, and other homosexual activities and are written by Pete Townsend, himself an accused pedophile. Perhaps Keith the Wonderwall either doesn't listen to the lyrics in music or he simply prefers sex with children over looking at Mick Jagger's crotch. Also the cover is an Andy Warhol so any homosexual tendancies are understandable. I'm suprised Amazon allows hateful, prejudicial statements such as these to remain posted.

Gary Costello pepperland writes.. ."Monotonous.Dull.Uninspiring.Unadventurous. What this CD needs is stuff the calibre of All You Need Is Love or Uncle Albert/Admiral Halsey. Stuff that sparkles and shimmers." Are you really comparing Sticky Fingers to Wings. All you need is love is a mediocre Beatles song at best. Uncle Albert, are you kidding me, why not compare it to Silly Love Songs or Ebony and Ivory or Say Say Say or any other piece of crap that SIR Paul McCartney spewed forth with the help of his hack wife in the 70's and 80's. My god its WINGS. If thats adventurous and inspiring than I'm gonna shoot myself.

Like I said this is the dictionary definition of rock music. If you had never heard rock before, and you wanted to hear the best of the best, this is what you should listen to. On this album the Stones are brash, brazen, epherial, epic, sparse, rootsy, stumbling, staggering, raw, real, and timeless.

Never again will another band have such a prolific streak of genius similar to the Stones from 68-72. Beggars Banquet, Let it Bleed, Sticky Fingers, and Exile on Main St. Gimme Shelter, Tumbling Dice, Street Fighting Man, Wild Horses, Midnight Rambler, Can't you hear me Knockin, Monkey Man, Parachute Woman, Moonlight Mile, any one of these songs let alone albums would make a career for lesser musicians. The Stones pulled this off in spite of the death of a founding member, constant touring including the famed Altamont concert, drug addiction, moving to France for tax purposes, the pressures of fame, the death of the "peaceful" sixties, and the constant in-fueding in the band. Like I said the definition of Rock Stars.
