Free Music Review: All Meat, Maybe a Little Gristle, Not a Speck of Cereal
Hit: 5 Stars

My apologies to any vegetarians out there for the title - my wife's a vegetarian, but that's just what came to mind when trying to come up with a review title. OK, I'm going to yak about sax playing for quite a bit here so skip this review if ya just ain't interested.

First off, a "little gristle": The great tenor saxophone "Colossus" (pun intended, see Sonny's discography if you don't get it) played on two, possibly three cuts on this release and yet, the man is not credited. What?! For those of you who are not jazz fans, this was a MAJOR coupe! Getting the man who is widely believed to be the greatest living tenor sax player (and most important next to John Coltrane) to play on a rock-n-roll CD? Man, that is unheard of and is un-duplicated in the history of rock music. I would have thought the Stones would want to brag about this and also, that the publicity surely wouldn't hurt Sonny's career or marketability. I'd love to read the back story on this event. OK, enough of that. Well, maybe more on this a little later.

Tattoo You doesn't have ANY tracks that I'd call filler or stinkers. Now that IS surprising giving a lot of this stuff is re-worked rejects from earlier Goats Head Soup, Black and Blue, and Emotional Rescue. I think this release is actually very superior to all three of those. Maybe the opportunity to revisit material helped make it stronger. I do a lot of composing myself and find this is often the case.

Now, back to our CD. Though it's "all meat" (tastes like chicken), there are some tracks on Tattoo You that in my opinion are clearly superior to the rest of the material. Do I even have to mention "Start Me Up"? Good God, what an anthem these guys penned. I never get sick of hearing it. I also love the live version on "Flash Point". In addition to "Start Me Up" we get the funky groove of "Slave" supposedly recorded during the "Black and Blue" sessions with certain musician's parts erased (like the then always obnoxious Jeff Beck for instance). The jazz tenor sax virtuoso Sonny Rollins performs on "Waiting On A Friend" (a fact that, as a very informed jazz listener, I find amazing). "Waiting On A Friend" has long been a Stones favorite of mine, possibly my very favorite Stones tune depending on what day it happens to be. But back to "Slave", I've read Rollins also played on this tune, but I'm not so sure that's him. As soon as I heard that tenor sax solo on "Slave", especially the incredible control playing in the extremely high register, I thought MAYBE that was Rollins horn, it sure isn't Bobby Keys, that's for sure. I've read Rollins plays on "Neighbors" as well but, again, I'm not so sure that is Sonny Rollins playing there. It doesn't sound as "burlesque" and "bar walking" as Bobby Keys' playing but it doesn't sound like Mr Rollins either.

Enough of the saxophone commentary! I also think "Heaven" is particularly strong though some don't seem to like it I think it has a very haunting groove thing going on. Yeah, I like Heaven a lot.

Heck, it's all great stuff, just some is a little greater than others.

My only complaint about this terrific sounding re-issue and the other Virgin remasters (remastered by Bob Ludwig in 1994 with Apogee's superb UV 22 encoding) is it would be nice to know who actually played on the tracks (you can supposedly get this information on the Wikipedia of course but that brings us back to those Sonny Rollins arguments of mine - I think the Wiki has this wrong) - Hey, I bet Mick Taylor once wished he could see the credits as well. There is nothing in the way of liner notes. Guess Virgin is saving that for the classic re-issue series once sales start dropping off again.
