Free Music Review: Nothing short of a Masterpiece

Fans of anime, including myself, may enjoy purchasing soundtracks to relive some of the moments of a beloved series through nostalgia and character themes, or to see the anime through the composer's eyes as excellent composers such as Yoko Kanno and Yuki Kajiura have shown us. But it's extremely rare to find a soundtrack that stands on its own as a true masterpiece, exclusive from its original work. Ouran Host Club's beautiful chamber music OST is one example, and this OST, Romeo X Juliet is yet another.
I'll be honest, when the anime aired, I had huge expectations. Even most fans were hoping "I hope Gonzo finally does it right!" Good characters, decent action and a lot of feel-good moments, but ultimately didn't live up to a lot of fans' expectations with the plot-holes and weird plot twists. But the moment I popped in this CD, which I bought right after it was released and during the airing, I was instantly enchanted. This work by composer Hitoshi Sakimoto is brilliant and emotional in every way, and is one of the best soundtracks to a Japanese anime that I've ever heard and I'm quite surprised to find how few projects he's composed for after listening to this.
With 31 tracks, including Lena Park's gorgeous Japanese rendition of "You Raise Me Up", you can't go wrong with this whether or not you're a fan of the anime, or even anime in general. If you appreciate beautiful classical/chamber music themed soundtracks, this is a must-have.
