Free Music Notes for Other SongsFree Music Review: Quite good, but not his best Hit: 4 Stars
Don't listen to these other reviews...I have been a die-hard Sexsmith fan since buying Grand Opera Lane at a used CD store in 1996 and have purchased each of his subsequent releases. So believe me when I tell you I KNOW Ron Sexsmith, and this is easily his weakest effort next to his debut. Too many of the songs sound the same to me and you can really hear a very talented artist here who just seems to be going through the motions. Of course it gets 4 stars cause the songs are still good and Ron's voice is lovely, but this is nowhere near one of his best albums. I highly recommend getting "Blue Boy", "Cobblestone Runway" or "Retriever", my 3 fav (and I think his best) albums of Ron's;
Free Music Review: I'M GOING TO LIKE THIS ALBUM...I JUST KNOW IT Hit: 3 Stars
Heard him on the radio driving home from work, and I liked the track...bought this album. I love the first two tracks but I'm stuck on them, the music keeps going on around my head, all day whilst at work, walking, singing the melodies. I need to pass them over and listen to the rest of the album properly.I have developed into the others but not totally."Talking out loud" is superbly crafted, with Ron's slightly hesitant singing giving depth to the emotion of the song. "Strawberry blond" - great track and it tells a story. What I do like about Ron's songs are the references to his family. I like that slow burning acceptance of our ordinary lives. "Pretty little cemetery" - not sure about the music but I do appreciate the sentiments: little child questioning the old folks about death; reminding them of what's soon to come. I pick up reflections of Elvis Costello in some of the phrasing; the Byrds in some of the jangling guitar and the Beachboys in the feel of some songs. The problem with Ron is that his voice can sound overly morose but it is good though to hear an acoustic guitar being played in such a positive way.
Free Music Review: A disappointment Hit: 2 Stars
I first learned of Ron Sexsmith reading a newspaper article about today's lesser known singer/songwriters. I subsequently found this disc on a discount rack and bought it, without ever having heard any of Sexsmith's music.This mellow disc is full of simple songs with simple melodies. Many of the songs consist of Sexsmith's rather bland vocals over sparse background instruments. The songs are short, but with 14 of them, the disc seems very long. The songs, in my opinion, seem to run together to the point that they all start sounding the same. Individually, some of the songs are charming, but collectively, they don't do much for me. This is the kind of disc would be great if it's included in a 5-CD player on the "random play" function, allowing you to hear one or two songs off this CD before mixing in songs from other discs. As an entire album, however, I would prefer a wider variety of songs, as well as a more expressive and emotive vocalist.
