Free Music Review: fantastic traditional blues

Rory Block is, quite simply, the best traditional blues guitarist, man or woman, alive today. Her covers of Robert Johnson songs on this and her other albums are the closest approximations of the originals that I have heard. (Listen to Ramblin' On My Mind.) It is a real treat to hear this kind of traditional blues guitar playing clearly, without the cracks and static of the original artists' recordings. Even better yet, Rory applies her superb traditional Delta blues style to other traditional folk and blues songs as well as her own highly crafted originals. While other master blues musicians like Eric Clapton and Bonnie Raitt went for the big bucks by going mainstream, Rory Block has remained stubbornly dedicated to her first love, traditional blues. And those of us who love and admire this musical art form are the beneficiaries of her stubbornness.
