Free Music Notes for Irish Tour

Free Music Review: an album that truly deserves the perfect 5 rating
Hit: 5 Stars

Before buying Rory's "Irish Tour" album, I only knew a couple studio songs such as "For the Last Time" and "Just the Smile".

Let me say this- I don't know much about playing the guitar. I never got the urge to learn the instrument, and I just figured it would be more exciting to listen to OTHER people play the guitar. I'm heard just about every major classic rock artist from the 70's and can say without a doubt *many* of those classic rockers had a distinct tone and style to their guitar playing. Jeff Beck, Eric Clapton, Ritchie Blackmore, David Gilmour, the list goes on. Rory Gallagher was another guitarist who had a distinct sound and style, and as a result he's considered an extremely talented guitarist from those who've heard his music. I agree.

Despite having a humongous discography, he isn't played on any classic rock radio station in America. Those stations insist on playing the same few songs over and over and wouldn't DARE dip into the experimental vaults and pull out some Rory Gallagher stuff. I guess those stations believe people who grew up in the 70's only want to hear the songs that were popular at the time. I know from talking with many people who have an appreciation for classic rock that's completely NOT true. Rory deserves to be remembered. Thankfully, I can find a tall list of reviews on the internet from people all over the world who respect and admire Rory's talent.

"Irish Tour" is truly magnificent for its entire length (about 72 minutes). I can't really explain what kind of rock and roll he's a master at, though. He seemed to have invented his own sound. Sometimes I think I hear Zeppelin influences in his music, along with Deep Purple's famous keyboard jams. Moments of these two artists can be heard occasionally in Rory's music. However, Rory is definitely MUCH more than just some forgotten musician who copied a few Zeppelin licks. No, not at all. He has a very energetic, exciting, experimental and emotional style to his guitar playing that I honestly have never heard before. All the reviews that say he's a genius guitar player are exactly correct. He deserves to be remembered the same way Led Zeppelin does.

"Cradle Rock" begins the album. For the first couple minutes, you'll think to yourself "Okay, I don't see what the big deal about this guy is" because the track starts like it's going to be a typical energetic rocker. However, if you're patient, you will eventually hear some guitar soloing that is simply amazing. His guitar work is packed with so much emotion and melody, you can't help but fall in love with it. Let me also say that I absolutely LOVE the way this album was produced. Clear and clean production with some extremely heavy bass that rocks my speakers right off the stereo! It's amazing because lots of other live albums from 1974 were dirty and messy. Not this one.

I can't explain how much emotion this guy puts into his guitar solos. His solos are always in between a solo and a jam. That explains why every song on here goes over the 5-minute mark- he's spending most of his time on this album displaying some truly phenomenal guitar work. If you believe you hate guitar solos, Rory Gallagher will make you change your mind. Seriously. I've never heard anything quite like it before. Just when you think you're going to understand which direction he takes his music, he changes style.

Every song on "Irish Tour" is loaded with little creative goodies that never stop. His guitar playing is all over the place and the keyboard solos are quite nice as well. Songs like "Tattoo'd Lady" show a musician giving us a blend between a hard rock pop song and a display of guitar greatness. "As The Crow Flies" displays brilliant acoustic work, and having a lengthy version of "Walk on Hot Coals" play immediately after "A Million Miles Away" is perhaps the greatest back-to-back live performance ever made. Those two songs go together extremely well. Songs like "Back On My Stompin' Ground (After Hours)" remind me of the Allman Brothers Band.

Every song on this disc is creatively addicting. You will play this album over and over just to hear more exciting guitar work that you didn't catch the previous time you played the album. A guitarist that truly was one of the greatest, and displayed brilliantly on "Irish Tour". Please, I'm begging you, BUY THIS ALBUM!!!
