Free Music Review: Proper music from a proper musician
Hit: 5 Stars

Wow!... Rory was certainly in blistering form during these live performances. No matter what or where Rory plays, he draws on every joule of energy in his body and converts it into a myriad of tones and emotions through his guitar. My favourite tracks are "A million miles away" and "walk on hot coals". Both tracks constitute one of the best back-to-back live performances in Rock history. Rory demonstrates how can can play addictive, grainy riffs in "Cradle Rock" and then switch to delicate solos, oozing with feeling such as that in "A million miles away".

Even now, 36 years after this record was made, aspiring young guitarists accross the world strive to recreate the sounds and mastery of guitar achieved by Rory through a life of dedication to his craft.

Compare the longevity and greatness of this music with all the forgetful number 1 hits which plague the charts today. Music should be played because it sounds great, not because some mind numbing talent show told you to play it!

If you are new to Rory's music, this a fantastic place to dip in. Afterwards you will dive head-first into the back catalog!

Free Music Review: Smokin' Strings: Irish Edition
Hit: 5 Stars

Many non-jazz live recordings are slightly guilty pleasures: souvenirs of rowdy nights or sweaty seductions. No such fears exist for this recording; it is a picture of a guitarist and his working band firing on all cylinders. Rory Gallagher cut this with his group after some five plus years of constant touring. Then, too, he was one of only a handful of Irish musicians to play in Northern Ireland in this time of "The Troubles." There are not many crowd noises in this disc; one can guess the audience's love for Gallagher from his totally confident display of passion and prowess. Personal favorites on this disc are his blistering version of "Walk on Hot Coals" and his acoustic work on "As the Crow Flies." Actually, there is not a bad cut on the disc and the sound mastering is warm and full. Also, his band is accomplished in their support of him. The cover art shows Gallagher with the '61 Strat which he bought for a reported 100 Irish pounds as a teen. That was one purchase which produced a hundredfold return for Gallagher. The disc is very much recommended for anyone who loves electric blues.

To get right to the point, I consider this to be the greatest rock and roll album ever recorded. It is worth remembering that portions of this album were recorded live in Northern Ireland right in the middle of the "troubles." Most touring acts wouldn't even go near this area at the time because of the constant threat of violence. Consequently the audiences got to see few shows and were no doubt starved for some real rock & roll. Since Rory was first and foremost a live performer who fed off the energy of a crowd, the performances captured on this album are amazing for the passionate interplay and raw power of Rory's singing and playing (particularly his slide guitar playing.) Rory's band (Gerry McAvoy - bass, Rod D'Ath - drums, Lou Martin - piano) is tight as a drum and match his intensity---just listen to the absolutely jaw-dropping "Walk On Hot Coals," maybe Rory's greatest recorded moment. One thing I have always wondered, since this album was supposedly recorded at several locations on the same tour, is if the COMPLETE recordings still exist of the various shows that were taped? If only...

If you are new to Rory Gallagher's music, I recommend picking up this one! It was my first album by him and I've been a fan ever since. Every track is awesome and the majority of them last 7-10 minutes a song. Free Music Review: One of the best guitar albums of all time
Hit: 5 Stars

I have been a guitarist my whole life and I listen to all the greats in blues, jazz, and rock and Rory Gallagher is probably the best guitarist to date...with the exception of Mike Bloomfield. Although guitarists like Clapton and Hendrix have contributed to the evolution of rock n roll guitar and its textural sound, Rory Gallagher is a better guitarist than both. Rory is much more fluent in roots music like blues, folk, celtic, and rock than that of Hendrix and Clapton. Rory's live performances dworf that of Hendrix and Clapton. If you are looking for a rock album that will knock your socks off...purchase Rory's Irish Tour album. It will show you exactly what I'm talking about. Another masterpiece is Live in Europe. Trust me, you will wonder why he wasn't more popular..which is still a mystery. Oh, by the way, you do not nee dto be a guitarist to love Rory...my best friend is not a musician at all and loves the guy.
