Free Music Notes for Irish TourFree Music Review: A great guitarist from Cork Hit: 5 Stars
Rory Gallagher was from Cork, the 2nd largest city in Ireland. On a visit to Ireland in 2004 , I was at the Cork City Hall where part of this was recorded. Directly across the street is a small store called Tatse, which is devoted to selling everything and anything associated with Rory Gallagher. Along with all his other work, this CD is on sale there but this is the only one where they can point their finger out the window and say "He recorded this one right there." Kinda neat.
If you've never heard of Rory Gallagher, you're in for a treat.
He was a fine singer and songwriter but his real ace in the hole was his guitar playing. He could play like a Stevie Ray Vaughan or Duane Allman and this live setiing gives him plenty of space to uncork some great solos. Gallagher came before U2 and it's a shame he never got the recognition that the band from Dublin enjoys.
Free Music Review: Always at His Very Best... Hit: 5 Stars
Back in the 70's I saw Rory play at the legendary 'My Father's Place' in Roslyn Long Island where he played every song on the CD so it brings back indelible memories. Rory and the band played with such power and energy I recall thinking they were undermining the structural integrity of the building. The technical excellence of Rory's blues guitar and vocals were transcended by the personal connection he made with the audience. He was more than a performer: he tore off a piece of his soul giving everyone a share. Unreal. But let the music speak for the Man. That night the audience were euphoric. Though I have seen many great performers over the years nothing tops that night. This CD brings it all back. In two hundred years people will still be enjoying this classic. "Nice one, Rory. Nice one, Son. Nice one Rory, let's have another one."
Free Music Review: Rory, we hardly knew ye Hit: 5 Stars
Previous reviewers have done a very good job with their high praise of this masterpiece, but there are two things I would like to share with anyone who might be tempted but not yet convinced to add this gem to their collection.
First, the blistering, full length Walk On Hot Coals featured on this disc is perhaps Rory and his bandmates at their finest. That cut alone is worth the price of the CD.
Second, this cd is a wonderful complement to, not a substitute for, Rory's Irish Tour 74 DVD. Although there is some overlap in the song titles, there is no overlap in the performances. (I really liked the DVD, and almost didn't buy the CD because I thought it would contain mostly the same perfomances. It would be a shame for anyone to make that mistake.)
Many thanks to Rory and the boys for these superb performances.
Free Music Review: one of my personal favorites . . . get it now!!!! Hit: 5 Stars
Simple - this is one of the best live albums around, especially if you love electric blues guitar (although the acoustic tunes are excellent as well).
I had this on vinyl as a teen back in the 70's (I think I only bought it at the time because it intrigued me that there was an Irish bluesman) & picked it up on CD the first time I saw it had been released. I now also own the DVD version as well.
Great songs, great playing & great crowds - you can feel the enthusiasm of the crowd & the passion of the band. "back On My Stompin Ground", Tattoo'd Lady", "I Wonder Who" - not a bad cut on here.
I wish I could have been there or at least had the pleasure of seeing Rory live. He is missed - where's the next great Irish bluesman when you need him???
Free Music Review: Stratocaster Master Hit: 5 Stars
I got the Irish Tour DVD and I was hooked. It was great to see a Bluesman put it out there and rip through the Strat. The band is very tight in this recording. If you don't start moving your feet during "Walk On Hot Coals" then you are... well... my wife going for the volume knob that is set at 11. I guess her feet were moving too. This Album Rocks out completely. It is Live, Raw, Tight, and worth every penny. The Strat is way out front on the recording. The rhythm section is right there. The only down side is Rory's vocals are set back a bit on the sound stage. I thought the DVD release of this recording was engineered a little better on the mix. Still 5 stars. It is live man.
