Free Music Notes for Rules of TravelFree Music Review: After A Long Silence, Cash Returns With A Masterpiece
Making a name for yourself can be tough when your parent has already conquered the same field. This can be said about almost any profession. In the music industry, one need look no farther than the careers of Julian Lennon, Louise Goffin and, more recently, Jakob Dylan, Simon Collins and Sally and Ben Taylor. One artist who has dodged the second generation bullet is Rosanne Cash; over the last 24 years, she has developed a critically acclaimed and commercially successful career with her own unique brand of country, pop, rock & folk. That's why it was so odd when she just seemed to disappear six years ago. Now, after the birth of her son, the (temporary) loss of her voice due to vocal polyps and severe writer's block, Cash has returned with her most assured, deeply moving release to date. Make no mistake....there's a darkness and density to RULES OF TRAVEL that's a tad bit daunting upon your first few listens. However, much like the March Hare in "Alice Through The Looking Glass", if you stick with it, you'll be rewarded in the end with a musical Wonderland. Opening the disc is "Beautiful Pain", the best "could-have-been-written-by-Cash-but-wasn't" song yet. With it's understated arrangement, upper register notes and backing vocal by Sheryl Crow (I would have liked to seen more of a harmony performance from Crow, though - their voices are awesome together!), this is literate pop at it's best. With lyrics the likes of "Hiked out to the meadow and lay down on the fragrant moss/Cut down your own tree, then meticulously/Built a cross right there and stared back at me/And climbed up on it again", this is the kind of thoughtful, imaginative writing that just sucks you in and, sadly, we just don't see enough of today. Next up is "44 Stories", a semi-autobiographical tale that leaves me yearning to hear the other 43 (or would that be 47 now?), each one conveying one year in Cash's life, and a corresponding event/story from that year. "I'll Change For You" has to be my favorite song on RULES OF TRAVEL. I love both Rosanne Cash and Steve Earle to death, but I never in a million years would have ever thought of them as duet partners. Boy, was I wrong! Their match-up is a stroke of pure musical genius! With it's soaring chorus ("Cause everything reminds me of you/A baby's feet/An old man's smile/A silent scream, a lover's cry/'Til I can do nothing/But change for you"), this ode to obsession traverses the depths of a relationship that is, at best, all-consuming and, at it's worst, dangerous: "I'll change for you/I don't care what the books say/I'll change for you/I don't care what my friends say/I'll change for you/And I won't make you pay." Cash's sultry lead vocal wraps around Earle's gruff words, resulting in a blended vocal track that is both heated and honest(And it doesn't end there....additional touches that warrant mention are the sequenced backing vocals and the muted horns - both add a nice, comtemporary touch to the track without overpowering it). The disc's title track is pure pop poetry. Cash has been quoted as saying that finishing "Rules Of Travel" was one of the things that held up the completion of this disc; she wanted to get the song, particularly the lyrics, just right. Well, she succeeded! "September When It Comes" is delicate and poignant, especially with the recent passing of June Carter Cash. Rosanne's vocal is tender and strong, supporting her dad Johnny's weathered, weary delivery in a way only a child could support a parent. Mark my word, this track WILL win a Grammy next year! Next up is "Hope Against Hope", penned by Jakob Dylan and Joe Henry. There's something about this track that reminds me of Cash's version of "All Come True", albeit more grown-up, whatwith it's propulsive vibe and earthy, regret-tinged lyrics ("This won't stop 'til I do/'til I learn to kill the thought/Of everything I could have said/Of everything I wished I'd not"). Brilliant! Capitol should rush release this as the second single! "Will You Remember Me" has a gentle, lopping quality to it, with a sterling vocal that may just rank as one of Cash's five all-time best! At first I wasn't all that thrilled with "Three Steps Down" - it seemed like too much of a rehash of a lot of past Cash material - but then I REALLY listened to it. That's when the lyrics kicked in for me ("The dead are dancing 'cross the room/Where candles burn and shadows loom" and "So coming down/It's like water after wine") and this wonderfully visual song came alive. "Closer Than I Appear" is the hardest-rocking track on the CD, with a searing vocal, tinkling, pumping keyboards, picture perfect percussion and hand claps (anything with handclaps is the epitome of cool!). "Western Wall", a carry-over from 1996's 10 SONG DEMO, is a bit more fleshed out here, but it's still as deeply haunting and thoughtfully beautiful ("I don't know if God was ever a man/But if she was, I think I understand/Why he found a place to break his fall/Near the Wastern Wall"). RULES OF TRAVEL closes with the hushed "Last Stop Before Home." With it's heart-felt lyrics ("I am the keeper of a very old flame/It's long been ignored but it's not been completely in vain"), this song could be commenting on a love affair or Cash's musical roots. Whatever the case may be, the song closes the CD on a perfect note. So....purchase your ticket, settle into your seat, crack open this slim volume of thoughts and feelings and introduce yourself to the RULES OF TRAVEL, my frontrunner for 2003's Album of the Year.
