Free Music Review: A Rightfully Famous "Cenerentola"

Even though this is probably the most famous and easiest-to-find "Cenerentola" recording, it was one of the later ones I heard. I'm glad I finally did get around to hearing it, though. Apart from a few flaws, it completely lives up to its great reputation.

Cecilia Bartoli proves why she's the most famous Cenerentola of today. Her rich and warm yet youthful mezzo and effortless coloratura are perfect for the role; she's probably just the kind of singer Rossini had in mind. On the same level are Alessandro Corbelli's rich voiced, exuberant Dandini and Michele Pertusi's magnificent Alidoro. Enzo Dara may be slightly past his vocal prime as Don Magnifico, but his bass is still resonant and agile and he makes the most of the role. As for William Matteuzzi's Don Ramiro, at first I didn't like him, but now I think he's fine. His timbre is a little bit plain, but his voice has the ideal lightness and agility. Riccardy Chailly conducts the Orchestra del Teatro Comunale with fantastic Rossinian sprightliness; only a moment or two is a little too fast.

Every available Cenerentola recording is good in its own way, but I can understand why this one is the most famous. It's a great choice for newcomers to the opera, especially as a companion to the 1995 Houston Grand Opera DVD, which features most of the same singers. Even if it isn't your first Cenerentola, if you're a Rossini fan, then it's a must-hear.

We live in a golden age for Rossini singing, and this recording offers considerable proof of it. Although she occasionally strays into overdone vocal mannerisms, Cecilia Bartoli is a fetching Cenerentola with the right combination of pathos and triumph. William Matteuzzi offers an ardent Don Ramiro, while Alessandro Corbelli's Dandini is appropriately hilarious. Chailly keeps things moving in the right direction. For anyone who requires the most up-to-date recorded sound along with good, idiomatic singing, this recording is a natural. --Sarah Bryan Miller
