Free Music Review: Royal Scots Dragoon Guards Compendium

This three CD set is an attempt to re-package the earlier recordings made by the Scots Dragoon Guards in the early 1970s. Several long playing LP records have been combined here for this collection. Unfortunately the odd length of the CDs does not make sense. Two of the three are but 30 minutes long, and third is a mere 20 minutes. Why couldn't all the music have been included on two CDs? Even still we are missing some of the material from the earlier Records. The original "Farewell To The Greys" RCA Album of 1972 containing the "Amazing Grace" hit sported three pipe band medleys, as well as regimental music. Only one pipe medley from that album is included here. The other two pipe band medleys are from different releases.
With three CDs it seems all of the material from the original RCA records of 1972-73 could have been included here. Such is the popularity of the Scots Dragoon Guards over the years that many of their recordings have been re-packaged numerous times under different labels. This latest one appears no better. With no linear notes there is no background to either the music, or the Scots Dragoon Guards bands themselves. This is ashame as these were famous years for these two bands, and listeners, new and old, deserve better background information. While the pipe band remains today, the military band is no more, and that makes for added interest. Many of these arrangements were original works for band and pipes, and that unique sound of the Scots Dragoon Guards is no more today. A collection like this deserves linear notes! Even the CD pictures on the albums are small and hard to see.
Despite the omissions and minimum production value, the quality of the recordings remains the same, and the CD transfer does justice to the Scots Dragoons music. For a three CD set, with LEGENDS as its portencious title, more production value should be provided here besides just the music. Not even all the tracks from the original RCA recordings are included. While sound quality is good, I give the overall production three stars because it does not provide the listener with any accompanying notes or band biographies. A good buy if you want these original tracks in your collection, but without the linear notes one shall be sadly lacking in the whole Royal Scots Dragoon Guards story.
