Free Music Notes for Star Wars: Shadows Of The Empire [Enhanced CD]

Free Music Review: Brilliant addition to the Star Wars musical scores.
Hit: 5 Stars

I received this magnificent disc today and gave it a listen. Having previously read the novel and comic of the same name, not to mention played the video game, I found this soundtrack to be an excellent companion the Shadows of the Empire storyline. Not only does it stand on its own as an inspiring piece, but it adds greater depth to the story by tugging at the emotions as all great Star Wars music does. This soundtrack helps the reader imagine all of the story's scenes in their mind, almost allowing the reader to create their own movie in their head.

The concept of this soundtrack, which is to be the film score to a film that only exists in the form of a book, was a risky undertaking on the part of the composer, Joel McNeeley, yet he accomplished this task very well. I highly recommend adding this disc to your music library.

Free Music Review: Exceptional!

I was skeptical when I read someone other than John Williams was going to write "Star Wars" music. "This must be what it felt like when George Lazenby took over for Sean Connery," I remember thinking. Still, the prospect of the first new "Star Wars" music in thirteen years was enough to make me buy the first copy I could find...

And I loved it. Joel McNeely knows when to use the classic "Star Wars" themes, and when to add in new work. I really enjoyed "The Battle of Gall" and "Beggar's Canyon Chase" (why wasn't there more of that Dash Rendar theme?), but "Destruction of Xizor's Palace" is my favorite.

John Williams is still the man when it comes to "Star Wars" music, but if Joel McNeely were to do some more work... I'd listen.

Free Music Review: Excellent
Hit: 5 Stars

When I first got the Shadows of The Empire music, I thought that it was going to sound like something totally different from Star Wars. I was totally wrong: Joel Mcneely's score was very familiar to the music of Star Wars and sometimes better. A difference between the two is that SOTE is darker, resembling the style used in The Empire Strikes Back. Beggars Canyon Chase, Battle Of Gall, and Destruction of Xizor's Palace, are simply the best, using the orchestra to its fullest. The Seduction Of Princess Leia introduces to the music of Star Wars a waltz, almost resembling the waltz in Batman. Strict John Williams fans might not like Joel Mcneely's style for Star Wars but, for anyone else, this is a great pick.

Free Music Review: Wonderful, a work of it's own.
Hit: 5 Stars

As a big fan of John Williams, I was skeptical at first at the possibility of having a Star Wars soundtrack done by someone else, even if there is no movie to back it up. Now I have no doubt that this music stands up to the best of what Mr. Williams has to offer. Not only is the music enticing and outstanding, there are moments of great beauty thrown in at the right moments. Simply wonderful. I, deep down, almost wish Joel McNeely had gotten the chance to do the music for the prequel movies. I know, it would be sacrilegious, but I think he might have done a better job, (not that Williams' score is that bad.) Excellent CD. Great for any fan of film music.

Free Music Review: Simply Magnifecent
Hit: 5 Stars

I'll admit, I was skeptical about purchasing a Star Wars album NOT scored by Williams. Indeed, it seemed almost impossible to imagine that galaxy far, far away without the maestro's overtones and style as it's so deeply ingrained in the public consciousness (and the fanbase). However, McNeely and the album exceeded all of my expectations. He meld;s Williams' familiar themes with his own style and the result is, if anything, even more operatic than the Maestros' work. "Imperial City", for example, is one of the most beautiful pieces of music I've ever heard and worth the price of admission alone. Buy it, Star Wars fans; you won't be disappointed.
