Free Music Notes for Introducing...Rubén González

Free Music Review: Excellent disc!
Hit: 4 Stars

I love this one, the rhythms are very very cuban, and make me feel very cultural. I love this cd as an owner of 100's of music in spanish or from hispanic countries, this is a very diverse one and anyone can enjoy it. Although Ruben only has but maybe one or two songs on it, it is very nice! I like cha cha cha!

Free Music Review: The greatest pianist alive...He will blow your mind!
Hit: 5 Stars

This C.D does represent the rich music of Cuba. Ruben is magnificant. The manner in which he plays the piano is none like I've ever heard. No one is better than this great master-musician. I myself am very picky when it comes to buying a C.D. However, I recommend this to be in every music lover's collection. It's a must!

Free Music Review: A slice of music history, and a bittersweet "What if?"
Hit: 5 Stars

In the midst of the sparkling, joyous cha-cha-cha, there's a melancholy tinge to this recording: as the liner notes suggest, it's a kind of snapshot of what might have been. Mr. Gonzalez is in his late seventies, poverty-stricken and arthritic. His being "discovered" appears to have come about partly because he was so hungry for access to a decent piano. We're listening here to the swan song of a genius who has had the misfortune of being a black man in Castro's Cuba, and who has therefore known the multiple oppressions of racism, Communism, and state-imposed poverty. Mr. Gonzalez improvises brilliantly on some of the later tracks, and there are indeed shades of a George Shearing or Erle Garner. So the CD raises the tantalizing question of where all this talent might have led, in a different time and place.

Free Music Review: If you like lounge music: buy this CD!
Hit: 3 Stars

If I were going to buy a lounge music CD, this would be it, but even so, I still had to mark it "not for me" when Amazon gave this to me as its top reccomendation. I checked it out of the library, and it's not a bad listen. Gonzalez has quite an exuberance and enthusiasm, but his on description of _Son_ music puts it best--that it's formulaic. Still, this is the most interesting album of its type that I've heard but not enough to pull me over as a fan. The best two tracks are the last two--which were composed by Gonzalez himself. Aside from a few good moments, it's just, well, bland, like lounge music. The liner notes are wonderful and interesting.
