Free Music Notes for Introducing Ruben GonzalezFree Music Review: One of the best jazz piano recordings of any genre ! Hit: 5 Stars
I am so grateful that Mr. Gonzalez was recorded at least once for us to enjoy his incredible talent. Hopefully, someone will be able to return to Cuba to make future recordings. One does not begin to satisfy the longing to here more of this master. This is not just hyperbole. When you listen to Ruben Gonzalez you feel that the pianist and the piano are one. The recording and the accompanying musicians fit perfectly. It is hard to pick a favorite from the too few nine tracks. Tumbao is a fantastic display of Gonzalez' virtuousity. When you listen to this recording, you feel "to hell with wars, embargoes, greed, etc. etc. . . . let's just have the music and it will all work out." Someone buy this man a piano!
Free Music Review: You're more familiar with Rubén González than you think Hit: 5 Stars
This is a brilliant album. You're more familiar with it than you think: I'm sitting here at my local Starbuck's and they're playing the CD in full, 11 years after its release. It's not a one-time occurrence: you hardly ever hear the contemporaneously released Buena Vista Social Club these days, but you hear "Introducing..." everywhere and all the time. González passed away in 2003 at age 84, but his legend only grows. As to why González was discovered by worldwide audiences so late in his life, well, there was the little matter of the Revolution and 37 or so lost and buried years (1959 to rediscovery in 1996).
Free Music Review: The Finest Music from a Rich Musical Culture Hit: 5 Stars
A few months ago, I bought Buena Vista Social Club, which subsequently sent me on a mad shopping spree for many of the titles offered by World Circuit. This is exactly how I came across Ruben Gonzalez' album, and have been absurdly plugged into his music ever since. His music is an especial comfort to me, a product of Cuban parents, because, now that I no longer live in Miami, it always manages to take me home and evoke images of daquiris and plm trees swaying gently in the ocean breeze. It narrows the gap felt by exile Cuban musicians and those who remain on the island. Gonzalez' masterful playing brings the nostalgic essence of old Havana to the world, and that is why I sincerely love it.
