Free Music Review: Sadly no longer with us...
Hit: 5 Stars

Ruben Gonzalez no longer is with us. He passed away yesterday. At least he lived a life worth living! He was one of the best Latin pianists ever, one of those (like a friend said) that you just don't find any more. He combined technique and charm in a way that few have been able to. Fortunately for the rest of the world, Ry Cooder discovered him, along with Ibrahim Ferrer and a host of other Cuban geniuses of Latin music with his Buena Vista Social Club initiative. After that album, this "Introductory" recording presented Ruben Gonzalez's work to the world in a more focused way. You are bound to respect this gentleman once you take a listen to this album. Ruben Gonzalez: descansa en paz!

Free Music Review: Wonderful Music.
Hit: 5 Stars

How wonderful that the man's artistry was recorded before it's gone forever. The album brought me back to my childhood home in Havana - all the songs that remind me of my parents and grandmother, now gone but not forgotten. The execution is flawless technically and yet has passion and soul and whimsy ; I was surprised to find myself listening to the Russian ballad "Black Eyes" in the middle of the typically Afro-Cuban "Mandinga" and had to listen to the piece a few times before I caught the rift between the two compositions.

The album represents the best of the Cuban "big band" era and is a must for every lover of Cuban music. My Dad would have loved this CD.

Free Music Review: my every day need : like a cup of coffee ; my piece of mind
Hit: 5 Stars

when I bought this cd it was after I heard Ruben Playing with the buena vista social club. The song 'Pueblo Nuovo' opened my eyes to the fact that I was listening to the greatest Piano player in Cuban history and in Son History. I went to a box I got from my father and saw an old LP from this master pianist. Immediatly I went to the record store and bought his CD; that was his first ever after a lot of years. This emperer of the Son extracts respect from you while you listen to the way he plays the piano. If My father was still alive he would have looked up while we were listening to the music and say : ah, Ruben never lost his and lit up one.

Free Music Review: Again, 5 stars is not enough
Hit: 5 Stars

Buy it. You don't have to be Cuban, or even Latin, to enjoy it thoroughly. This CD is probably the best showcase of Cuban music that I've ever heard. But it's not just Cuban: it's jazz, it's MUSIC in its truer sense: natural, merry, upbeat. The only downside is that there are only 9 tunes. Those who don't like this CD maybe don't grasp what MUSIC should be all about (I still don't know anybody who didn't like it). Thanks to genius Ruben and his wonderful band for this precious gift to all of us. The thoughts and feelings that it evokes are long lasting and priceless. I want more.

Free Music Review: I can't stop playing this CD
Hit: 5 Stars

This CD will make you want to dance, to learn to play the piano, to bang on some bongos, to shake your maracas, to slick back your hair and grow a pencil-thin moustache, to oust the Communists and open a night club, to smoke a cigar and sip on some rum, to learn Spanish, and to find every other recording Ruben Gonzalez has ever done. I hope to God that someone will get him back in a studio and turn him loose again. He is a master and his incredible talent must be preserved and shared. Buy this CD by the case and give a copy to everyone you know that loves music.
