It is so rare that I can listen to a pianist and truly feel his or her presence at the keyboard. The direct, pure, clean, emotional quality of the playing on this CD is incredible--it is one of the most joyful, energetic recordings I have heard. I think I'm going to be giving this one to a lot of people--I am 32 years old, and raised on rock and roll, but not only would I give it to my friends, but also to my parents and grandparents.Lovely, timeless music, this is! I have a feeling I won't be hitting the EJECT button on my CD player for quite a while...

Having just seen the movie "Buena Vista Social Club", I needed to hear more wonderful music from the principal musicians and singers. Special thanks should go to Ry Cooder and his son for rediscovering this historic music before they all passed.( Of whom most already have.)
All the musicians and singers are very special in their own singular, as well as collective right, but my personal favorite is Ruben Gonzalez on piano. What a Gem! I urge anyone who loves Afro-Cuban Jazz to add this to your collection, you WILL NOT be disappointed!

A friend introduced me to this CD and I think I might wear it out. Three of the songs are his own compositions, while the rest of the songs are Cuban favorites. Ruben approaches these these pieces with a unique light and and lively style. The music is infectious and makes you want to get up and dance.
There is a nice variety. Unlike with some folk music where after you've heard a few songs it starts to sound the same--each song here is a gem of its own. This is one of those CDs where you will like every song.

Refreshingly breathtaking music from an elderly master of the piano. His technique is delicious. Starts every piece with a melodic statement,then sets the pace for the rythym section with a left hand stride. His improvisations are an emotional roller coaster; embellishing sweet vitage cubana melodies with lush and beautiful chords that cried, laughed, played, and rejoiced - all in decca color. I strongly recommend this indelible 70yr+ talent to any body looking for a "favourite CD"Free Music Review: Exhilerating - even if you don't know the story behind it.

Ruben Gonzalez is a treasure of the music world. It's clear from his playing that music is more than a vocation or a passion for him - it's life. I have had a passion for Afro-Latin based music of the Caribbean/Colombia/Brazil/Panama/Central America zone for thirty years. During that time those in the know would invariably concede that Cuban music and Cuban musicians were the best. I had never found a way to evaluate these opinions. Now we have Ruben Gonzalez to hand us the proof.
